I was told I would need an technician to come out and do some work so i can set up a supposed self install kit of internet and wifi even though I have had spectrum b4 I was wondering if their was a way I could set up up what needs to be set up myself any ideas

Solution
As long as the wires are still connected (depends on how long ago you had the service), you might be able to use the self-install kit immediately. If it doesn't work then the tech will still be needed.

What if I switched wifi companies for a while and why have a self install kit then if you cant?

They may have disconnected the cable between your house and the box out near the street. I know when I had it installed and it was not testing good he went out disconected some other cables. He said cables that had nothing connected to them could degrade the signal for other people connected. Not sure he fixed whatever.

Although it sometimes cost for them to come out I would always do it. That way you can plug into the modem and do a speedtest while the guy is standing there.

All the self install is them registering the modem to your account. When the tech does it he calls a special number and they activate it then rather than ahead of time.

In multi-tenant buildings (ie apartments, condos, etc), all the lines are 'hot' since they are already physically connected. This was the case at one of our apartments and I didn't know I could have just bought a modem and connected it and instead paid for them to come out to connect their modem, which I eventually returned anyways.

At individual homes, this is usually not the case since they don't leave the house wires connected as it does cause signal issues and if there are multiple providers, then another provider couldn't connect.
