I currently use:
A Macbook Pro 15 (mid 2012) with the following specs:
CPU: Intel Core i7 2.6Ghz
RAM: 16GB
HDD: 2TB SSD
GPU: nVidia 650M - 1024MB

I would like to buy a back up notebook, which might become a replacement and at which time drive and memory can be upgraded. However, I don’t know whether the GPU can be upgraded. I use mine for processing high end photographs. All images are on an external drive attached by Thunderbolt.

I am looking at the following:
A Macbook Pro 15 (mid 2012) with the following specs:
CPU: Intel Core i7 2.3Ghz
RAM: 16GB
HDD: 500GB
GPU: nVidia 650M - 512MB

Is the GPU likely to present problems please? Also the CPU is somewhat slower : 2.3GHz vs. 2.6GHz

Thanks!

apple dislike you fiddling with anything, the likelyhood of you being able to upgrade anything but RAM is roughtly the same as winning the lotto.

as a backup computer, it is viable, but ofc being slightly less powerful. the old gpu isnt going to be recruited to crunch numbers, you will probably see an additional minute for compiling. maybe an extra second every edit. its hard to tell as im not really into os X, but the computing power will be 2-5% less. increase the time to do anything by 5% will give you a ballpark figure.

Many thanks. 5% slower will be fine as it's primarily intended as a backup in case the current notebook should need to be taken in for repairs. Only if a repair is impossible will it be used as a replacement. It's not worth paying the extra for the faster processor and there are fewer of those available on the secondhand market. I will leave the port opinion case anybody else wishes to reply, but thanks again.
