Spending 3 more years getting good at servers and VMware - worth it?

Hey guys, got a few questions that may seem obvious to some but I'm in doubt and would like some help :giggle:

I'm a IT tech apprentice at a company that has a lot to do with servers and VMware. It's a bit outside of being an IT tech but they have been kind enough to let me in on that part and I have been working in that section for a while now. Last week I was offered by the company to swap my IT tech education with the data tech education as they felt it was a better fit for me and I agree. The difference here between the two educations are 3 years where IT tech is 2.5 years and data tech is 5.5 years.

I really like working with VMware but I don't have any experience outside of the company and want to know if it's something that's widely used and worth getting good at or it is too narrow or specific an area to excel at?
