Actually, the head of FFXIV development is Naoki Yoshida, not Akihiko Matsui. Matsui is playing a large role in the FFXIV development, but he is not the leader. Yoshida is.

In a western or non-Asian culture business I'd agree with you. In Asian business culture though it's always "boss is first" type hierarchy. Team members can have all the idea's they want, if it's not the boss's vision then it doesn't happen. It's absolutely frustrating to have to deal with that, you can't just walk up and say "hey lets try this" as they'll immediately chose to disagree. Instead you have to wait for them to put out something then you have to reply along the lines of "I agree -boss's name here-, couldn't your vision be better realized if we also did -insert underlings idea here-". Passive aggressiveness is how you get anything done all while making it look like the boss is getting the credit. Don't ever try to look better then your boss.

So yeah Tanaka was pretty much "this is how we designed the game in 2002 and I want it to stay that way" thus very little changed. You can see how the individual developers were slipping new and interesting things into the game all under the guise of following the boss's "Vision". Once Tanaka focused on FFXIV you can tell FFXI took a huge 180 degree turn, it surprised the **** out of the player-base who had become used to doing an event for three or more months before seeing our reward. Then XIV flopped and SE apologized then suddenly Matsui is directing XIV and FFXI started going down hill again, wasn't hard to see what happened.

Also remember just cause someone's got a name plate at a desk somewhere doesn't mean their actually doing that job. You can't fire people in Japan nor can you demote them. Instead higher ups tend to work around them or give them worthless positions aka "Executive Director of Qualitative Archival" which are just them managing their desk until they eventually retire or quit *cough* (health reasons).

Knew you would point to Diablo. Yes I know it's not traditionally an "MMO" however, it was online multiplayer with a massive number of players.

As for your comparison; no, they are entirely different statements...
 
Well, SE needs to add markers to the game, for NPCs (merchants, quest givers/receivers), this is one of the reasons I won't touch the game, they just throw you into the world and you don't know where to go, etc.

This is almost one of the main reasons (not necessarily the marker part), but MMO's now are way too easy than they used to be, which in my opinion takes the challenge out. Now, making someone understood easier isn't what I'm talking about. I'm talking about things being given to you, basically all you're doing now in some MMO's is just going from point A to B just because the arrow tells you that you need to do that, and you have no idea on the story or what is going on.
Think EQ back in the day, most people now that play these easy MMO's would be banging their heads against the wall.
