I just bought a msi gaming laptop and it came with a 128 ssd and a 1tb hard drive, is there any way I can move the windows install to the hdd without having to lose everything with a clean install?

Solution

Why would you do that?
The SSD is where the OS install should be.

I know why....you're running out of space on the SSD, and the 1TB is basically empty, right?

Just manage the space better. This was written just for you.

Unless you have some really weird use case, leave the OS on the SSD.
(but if you really, really want to, we can guide you through...

We compared two custom built laptops a few years ago

1 had a 128 GB SSD + 7200 rpm 2 TB HD
1 had a 7200 rpm 2 TB SSHD

No one could tell the difference performance wise in booting, gaming or apps (mainly AutoCAD) but with several users using either one, it was somewhat of a PITA as the C:\ drive had to be "cleaned out" periodically. As a result of our experiences on bith desktop and laptop, we now:

Put 256 GB SSDs on all desktops w/ 2 TB SSHDs
Put 2 TB SSHDs in all lappies

As USAF said, you want the OS on the SSD as boot time is about the only real "every day" task that you might notice behaving differently. In addition o what's in the SSD Guides he pointed out on those links:

a) E-mail also gets stored on the SSD ... unless you move it ( mine is 17GB compressed)

b) Even when you redirect program installs to the HD, you will find that "common files" get installed on the SSD no matter what you try and do. Adobe, Autodesk and other large / demanding apps, especially those have suites do this. I have well over 2 Gb of files in just 2 commonfiles folders

c) Steam isn't the only game company that defaults to C:\ ... most game vendors do this.

d) Temp files default to the C:\ drive .. surprised this isn't on the list

e) Dmp files and uninstall files as well as WU uninstall files can take up huge amounts of space.

f) I'm a pretty astute astute user and a bit anal about maintenance and just my Windows folder is 50 GB

if ya need help with any of those (except b), yell)

g) Make sure to also move ya page file (there's 16GB)
