Hello,
i have a new ssd that i want to install to boot faster. i have the original hdd with a lot of personal data on it. is there a way to use this old hdd without having to transfer to a backup and then reformat? i have vista ultimate on the hdd and will use either window 7 or 8 on the ssd.

Try this:
1. Remove your HDD. If you try installing windows you may accidentally format this instead. Put in your SSD and install a fresh copy of Windows 7/8.

2. After install, put the HDD back in. The files can still be used but you will have reinstall programs and delete the old windows install on the hard drive.

3. If you choose to, Go to your HDD in windows explorer and delete the windows vista folder. If you want to keep it, don't delete the folder. HOWEVER, you will not be able to access windows vista unless you config it to dualboot or you remove the SSD later.
