If I want to install Win10 on a SSD do I have to first do a free upgrade install on the HDD of the same machine, then do the installation from DVD/USB to SSD? I am trying to upgrade the hardware to put the new OS on a SSD.

Solution

'Only the OS'...no, not really. There is only one application I've seen that purports to do that, and all the results I've seen are mixed as to success. I would not recommend it.
Paragon Migrate, not free.

So...Do the upgrade to Win 10, obtain the ISO file, clean install on the SSD, in the same system.

For your pics/doc/music, see this about having them elsewhere:

Win 8.1...

You would first upgrade on the original disk, and then image that disk or clone it onto the new one (SSD). I am not sure if you could get the upgrade off the machine and onto bootable media with the upgrade intact. It might default back to the original operating system. I think cloning or imaging is your best bet. It copies everything on the disk.

Option 1:
Upgrade on the current drive
Clone to the new SSD, assuming the used space and SSD size equation works

Option 2:
Clone to the SSD first
Upgrade to Win 10 on the SSD

Option 3:
Upgrade to Windows 10
Obtain the Windows 10 ISO file
Burn a DVD or USB install stick
Install clean on the SSD

Thanks for the replies. I want to avoid cloning because I only want the OS on the SSD, was gonna leave doc, pic and vid files on the HDD. Is it possible to just clone the OS to SSD from HDD and leave rest of files behind?

I have to make a new one of these for Win 10, once the *&^% PC decides to upgrade properly.

There are a couple of the current cloning applications that will hopefully leave behind anything in Libraries, but I would still prefer to do that manually.
