I have sold a laptop on Ebay for repairs/parts. However, I want to wipe the SkHynix SATA M.2 SSD 256gb it came with. So I've put it into my PC's M.2 slot but it can't get past the BIOS or boot screen.

I have had a look and I think it should be compatible. The PC had a NVme in there before.

This is where in the manual talks about storage https://ibb.co/YRBF7z1

And this is the laptop ssd in situ. https://ibb.co/dL6KM2C (pls excuse fan I know it's pretty grim). No other hard drives are connected.

I'm also getting this screen when I attempt to move the boot order to laptop ssd in bios. https://ibb.co/9q8twyW

Is it possible the ssd is dead or is it actually not compatible?

Ive never done this before so would appreciate some advice.

Solution
Would it be possible to attempt installing windows 11 on a usb drive and use the laptop ssd, or just get to the part where I can delete all partitions and then it would be wiped?
Boot from windows installation media and clean your drive using diskpart.
This cleans all existing partitioning and data, so you can proceed to clean install.
Press Shift+F10 to open command prompt, when booted from windows installation media.

What motherboard?

The port may be only NVMe compatible.

SATA M.2 and NVMe M.2 are not the same.

And almost certainly a desktop won't boot from a laptop drive and OS, even if it IS compatible.
Ah really ok. It's the PRIME B450M-A motherboard. The manual says SATA mode support on the M.2 slot.

Consider getting a USB enclosure for this M.2 SATA drive, and manipulate it that way.

Check page 7 of your manual as it outlines what SATA ports being used disable the M.2 to make sure there is no overlap.

Unfortunately, beyond that your manual is pretty scant on details. Most BIOS will have a section where you can "secure erase" an M.2 drive but I could not tell if such a utility exists with that board. The issue could be due to format.

Thanks for reply. I dont think any of the Sata slots are being used so that shouldn't be happening.

I was hoping such an erase function might exist. Alternatively, I've found this bootable software that might work. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.ubackup.com/articles/wipe-hard-drive-from-bios.amp.html

Do you think that would be ok?

Ok thank you I will try this tomorrow. Just a bit concerned it might mess with my windows on the original PC ssd or is that not the case?

Unfortunately the PC doesn't get past the ASUS loading screen when I attempt to boot from USB with Windows so I can't access the diskpart tool. I had a look for other bootable software online like aomei but they all charge for creating a bootable device that can modify hard drive from BIOS. Does anyone have some free suggestions by any chance?

Probably trying to boot in wrong mode.
If USB windows installation media is prepared for UEFI boot, then you have to boot in UEFI mode.
Same goes, if installation media is prepared for legacy boot. You have to boot in legacy mode then.

Im pretty sure both windows 10 on usb is in uefi mode along with uefi mode switched on in pc bios. It just seems to hang on the asus screen rather than booting.

You have to boot USB drive in UEFI mode.
UEFI boot option will have UEFI mentioned.
Boot option without UEFI mentioned is for legacy boot.

Can you show screenshot from your BIOS boot priority settings?
(upload to imgur.com and post link)

Pics of bios and the loading screen it's stuck on. This is with bootable aomei media on usb but exactly the same thing happened with windows 10 on usb.

The loading indicator is a dotted circle when trying to use usb windows media.

Assuming ive done everything correctly and bootable media is just not working, im guessing I have no way to wipe this ssd. If that's the case I think probably best to just offer some money back on ebay and dispose of the drive

Are you sure USB boot media is prepared properly?
How did you create it?
Have you ever successfully booted from it before?

Try recreating it. Use rufus.
I've done a few bootable windows 11 and 10 images with this drive. I did windows 11 two days ago and it worked. I also let the aomei software format the usb and that didnt work either. I will try Rufus and see if that works.

Do you know if bootable media requires a hard drive to work? Or would it work without ssd inserted?

https://ibb.co/m6zcztr rufus config hopefully that is correct?
Those settings are for legacy boot.
You'll have to boot in legacy mode (boot entry without UEFI in it).
For purposes of cleaning the drive - it's fine.

If you're using windows 11 ISO image, then you may have problems though. Windows 11 requires UEFI boot.
Not sure, if it will allow booting in legacy mode.

Also - you may need to disable secure boot.

I think csm is enabled so it should have worked. I've done it through rufus and two usb uefi partitions came up. The second one will get to windows logo screen but it hangs on the loading circle.

Im a bit confused by some things. How do I check my bios is in uefi mode? I thought it was the Windows uefi mode option but in order to secure boot I have to turn that off. This BIOS isnt the most straightforward.

Csm option here:

Settings I think I have to change to remove secure boot (the reverse is what I had to do to enable secure boot last week):

Usb stick partitions:

Good news did some more fiddling, turned csm onto auto and chose 'other os' which I think means turn off secure boot but I kept tpm firmware rather than discrete and it booted into windows set up. Ive run diskpart to clean, could you confirm ive done it correctly please? https://ibb.co/ggFnp9m
