Question SSD Not Detected When HDD Connected

Hi

Currently running Windows 10. I added an SSD to my system 3 years back and have used it as the C boot up drive with standard hard drive for storage as D.

All was working well till today when all of a sudden, it won't detect SSD in BIOS and boots to standard hard drive where the drive assignment is flipped with the SSD now being D and standard hard drive being C.

So the SSD is working in Windows just not detected in BIOS when the hard drive is connected. When disconnecting the hard drive, the SSD shows up in BIOS and functions/boots normally.

Pretty weird situation since no changes or updates were made whatsoever and this just happened out of the blue. It's as if the BIOS only recognizes the SSD when its connected alone and not with other HDD in place. However, it was previously working for years.

Would appreciate any ideas or comments.

Thank you

Welcome to the forums, newcomer!

Might want to pass on a screenshot of what you see in Disk Management. That being said, what BIOS version are you on for your motherboard? I'm assuming you're referring to a desktop(and not a laptop) when you 've stated system.

When you added the SSD, did you reinstall the OS on the SSD(with the HDD disconnected) and remove any partitions that would've been assigned on the HDD to begin with?

Hi, thanks for your reply and the welcome!

1) My disk managent currently is just currently the small SSD drive. Attached a pic for reference

2) My HP desktop is pretty old and using the original BIOS from 2015 or so.

3) Yes, I installed the OS with the HDD disconnected but didn't remove the paritions on the older HDD as I just used it for storage while running Windows from SSD drive.

Thing is, the setup has been working for the past three years and just happened yesterday. So I'm currently using the SSD alone as the HDD has Windows but outdated with non of the relevant driver updates for the new components I added.

Follow up for others who may have the same situation and hope it helps someone.

Resolved the situation by replacing the battery on the motherboard itself. Never figured it was the battery that was affecting the BIOS settings, but weird issues were resolved with the replacement.

I then backed up the data to a secondary hard drive just for good measure.
