Ok i'm on the verge of placing my order for most of the parts I need for a new rig, but I'm kinda stuck on the SSD .

I'm in a bit of a dilemma due to a restricted budget,

A friend of mine suggested to go for an Intel 520 Series 180GB OEM-Edition because according to him its one of the most reliable and long lasting ssd on the market, it will cost me about 180 euros, because of this, i had to 'downgrade' my GPU to a Gigabyte GeForce GTX760 2GB DDR5

My original set up was going to be to get the Samsung SSD 840 Pro Series 128GB as an OS SSD which is priced at around 90 euros and a Gigabyte GeForce GTX770 2GB GDDR5.

So my question is this, is it better to go for a reliable OS SSD and slightly downgrade my GPU or is the Samsung just as good for a casual gamer such as myself?

thanks in advance

The load time, yes. Gameplay...no benefit.
But the SSD makes the whole PC feel snappier. The OS and any applications. The problem with games is they are so damn LARGE. If you were getting a 512GB or larger drive, then OK. But a 128 or 180, you'd...

pardon my ignorance regarding this subject, but wouldnt not installing the games on the ssd defeat the purpose of owning an ssd? i was told that I wouldn't benefit from 'faster loading times' if I installed a game on my secondary HDD... but this is going my first SSD OS with HDD data drive system so I'm not really sure how it all works

And having the games installed on the HDD isn't really THAT slow as far as opening. A good chunk of what is heppening is happening withint he OS, which IS on the SSD.
But while you're playing the game...you'll never notice.

ok that clears some things up, thanks!

with regards to Intel Vs Samsung, any thoughts? I personally prefer going for the 'cheaper' option so i can get a better gpu but my friend got me paranoid because he thinks that an SSD which isnt Intel won't last more than a year or maximum 2...

Either is just fine. Both reliable devices. Currently, I have a Sandisk and a Kingston. The Kingston has been just fine, but I'm not so sure about the Sandisk. It may have pooped its pants the other day.

I've got a 180gb SSD, and I'd recommend buying one at least that big if you can afford it. One thing to remember is that you need to keep about 25% of your SSD free, or its performance will drop.

Both the 520 and the 840 pro are the top end consumer models from Intel and Samsung. I'd look for a cheaper, slightly slower, higher capacity SSD from the same companies.

I think its worth using your SSD for games; lower load times are a good thing. I install all my games to my 1TB HDD, and then I use junction points to copy the games I'm currently playing to my SSD. Steammover is a free program that will create junction points to your SSD for any application you want (not just steam games). It only takes about a minute to add or remove the junctions if you want to switch out games.
