Which is better:
A slow ssd copying to a fast ssd
or
a fast ssd partioned as 2 volumes and copying one to other ?

Two physical devices provides some data protection. A hardware problem will potentially take out all partitions. Always multiple physical devices for me. A "slow" SSD is still pretty fast.

i also prefer multiple drives. if one goes down it only takes what is on it. multiple partitions are ok but a failed drive still takes EVERYTHING with it.

i have 4 drives in my main system. each with its own purpose and data on it. throw in th back-up external drive for it and well, my data is all kinds of safe

1a. Copy speed is dictated by the slowest device in the chain. There, the 'slow' SSD.

1b. Copying what? Why 2 partitions or volumes?

2. Not a lot of reason to split it up like that.

Present 1 tb data drive
A system drive 512
An application drive. 512

SO: add a fast 1 tb drive and split between system and application drive.
Add a medium speed, a lot better than present, 1 tb drive for data
or Add a fast drive for system
Add another fast drive and split between data and applications.,

Which would be more effecient ?????????

Don't "split" either.
Just have 2x drives if you want.

One for OS and applications, the other for other stuff.

What drive is in this system now?
Or is this a whole new system?

Any downside to having 2 partitions.
(beats changing a lot of paths previously set up.

Crucial MX500 1TB - system 550mb/s
PNY 512gb - applications 550mb/s

I assume that:
WD_BLACK SN770 1TB - 5150mb/s - data files
WD_BLACK 1TB SN850X up to 7,300 MB/s for system - applications
split 512/512
Would provide a good performance upgrade.

I'm still wondering why the split of OS in one partition and applications in another.

And no matter how it is configured, you'll see little or no user facing difference in those WD NVMe drives.
