SSD with HDD?

Hi everyone,

I am buying 1TB Samsung 850 SSD. 1TB is enough for me but I am interested, is secondary HDD necessary? When I look at every computer it has SSD + HDD.

People buy a regular HDD so that there are less writes to the primary drive. This extends the life of the first drive.

But wouldn't a hybrid be just as good as a secondary drive?

ofcourse, but hybrids are more expensive and the writing speeds aren't that much better compared to a ssd

Hybrid portion of an SSHD can range between 8GB to 32GB+ NAND flash memory, the idea for these drives is to store most frequently used programs in this buffer to quicken things. The cache size isn't very big and wouldn't expect much in gaming sense since modern games are quite large, not sure how a game 30odd gig would go with an SSHD.

People have HDDs for storage because SSDs were pretty small and quite expensive, it's been a longish trend and advised for this setup configuration, ie 256GB< capacities. SSD's are now 50c a GB making the price for 500GB/1TB not that bad.

It's not uncommon for people to have more than one HDDs for various reasons. For a typical gamer, you'd have a HDD to store your game backups/movies/music/downloads, and keep your favorite games on the SSD.

Having an HDD as a storage drive is not about preserving the SSD's longevity rather space/affordability. Not to say an SSD will never wear out, it will, if you write 10GB a day for 10 years. Google life span of an SSD.

So I am not writing every day 10GB on that disk and also 10 year is a long time. So it seems that I don't need an external HDD.
