Standard thermal "wax" - better than paste?

When I bought my FOP38, it can with a pinkish thermal "gum" on the bottom. I scraped it off (which was VERY hard to do, BTW) and put on Arctic Silver. I just assumed it was better. But I read a review somewhere (hardocp?) that the those "gum/waxes" might be superior because they melt and form into the shape of the CPU contact area. Has there been any testing done on this? I mean, why would GlobalWin put that stuff on (replacing silicone thermal pastes they used before) if it didn't work betteR?

I think this is something either Tom or one his boyz should look into.
