on power options I have standby set. it works well - but only once per
session. If it has put the computer into standby once and the system is then
left again for the specified time it only gets as far as the screen saying it
is saving settings for standby and it sticks there necessitating a reboot.
Is standby designed to work only once per session?

No, but standby was designed for laptops. On a desktop it can be unreliable.

Standby does not display a message to the effect that it's "saving
settings." Could you be referring to hibernation?
