I have the Digital Premium Edition and I played the game all night and into the morning. With my specs. (see signature), I'm running Starfield on ultra at 1440p. When in the city and out in the open, I get 45 to 50 FPS. When indoors (through load screen), I get around 90 FPS. On ultra settings, the game runs smoothly without any glitches. But, because of weird mirages/shadows near the walls, I had to dial down Render Resolution Scale from ultra to high settings (62%). After that it worked well.

I've watched a lot of YouTube videos complaining how Starfield doesn't run well on mid-range PCs and only a high-end system will be able to run it at ultra smoothly. That's not true. Maybe it's a problem if you own a Nvidia GPU, or play it at 4K (which I haven't). But, I haven't had any issues...yet.

Par for the course with PC. With all the different combos of hardware and installed software, some are going to have a lousy experience and others won't, which sucks more for the former, since nowadays, paying to beta test is more common.

My performance would run just under 60 fps at 1440p with custom settings like shadows turned down and such, i moved the resolution scale down to 65% and im getting over 60 fps and it doesnt look blurry or awful, give it a shot. Also turn down volumetric stuff

Not sure what the thought process is behind releasing new games with specs that a majority of pc gamers can't run, as evidenced by the Steam Hardware Survey and similar. Also, not really sure how one can be claiming to play at certain settings and resolutions when the reality is that the scaler is lowering that. Seems counterintuitive and misleading.

Not target audience for such a game so my opinion really isn't important to developers and enthusiasts.

I don't see FSR lowering my resolution or any of my settings.

Am I misunderstanding what this means?

From somewhere on the net.
Makes native resolutions become clearer and crisp. Render scaling are beneficial for gamers that are limited to lower resolutions like 1080p because it can upscale the native resolution close to 1440p or 4k depending on the scaling modifier that you set it on, however this is not as clear as the native 1440/4k but at least you can experience a much clearer image than the native 1080p.

I don't see a problem with companies releasing games like that. It gives people something to look forward to on new hardware. It can be used as a yardstick, the next Crysis.

The game is CPU bound on anything other than newest gen CPU.
And only the top range GPU can run it natively without upscaling

He is using a 4090. I am using a 6700 XT on ultra at 1440p and getting smooth results. While I'm playing, there are no jitters or glitches anywhere. As far as upscaling is concerned...I have FSR2 turned on, the game does that automatically for those who have AMD cards. It can be turned off though.

So, I wanted to see for myself if I need a "top range GPU" to run it natively with FSR2 turned off.

While wandering New Atlantis, the FPS drops from an average of 45 to 33. The FPS is higher when you enter a building through load screen. Regardless, the game still ran smoothly. Obviously there was a drop in graphic quality (lighting and shadows were the most noticeable), but on ultra there were no jitters or glitches.

I'm not sure what the fuss is about. My PC is mid-range and it runs Starfield smoothly on ultra at 1440p (with FSR2 turned on). Some of these YouTubers baffle me with wild claims that don't align with my experience.

The thing I see is a poorly optimized pie in the sky price/performance game that gets all this hubbub for people to think they need to go get the newest greatest to then have the disappointment to find that the game won't run properly on anything but (as mentioned) high end equipment...and even at that, as evidenced by these videos and other comments, is going to continue to be poorly optimized for the foreseeable future. It's the 'game plan' that (recently) was put into action in such games as CB77.

I guess at that same time though, I tend to get a bit of tunnel vision, because there are certainly lower profile releases that run well on the hardware many more people have in hand. IDK, I guess I live in a dream where developers would care up front and make games optimized in such a way as, for instance, Forza....this is a game that plays and looks great darn near all the way back to a potato.

I guess if there is a space for it, and people are willing to spend the money on the game, and then on more hardware, then it's "good for the industry", right? (?)

I guess it should be expected since they made Fallout 76 on the same old engine as FO4, despite the game having a MUCH larger world and needing something more robust to run it. So naturally they had to go into damage control mode for months after the REAL fallout, which was the poor fan response. So when they acted like they had a way to make TONS of worlds in Starfield, as if it was easy as pie, I was skeptical.

IS Starfield using a different engine or is it still the old one bent into shape?

Most reviewers are using Nvidia cards, hence bad reactions.

The nvidia side of things is busted, if you play on ultra settings anyway. Most people try that and it runs badly in New Atlantis. Once its fixed the problems will go away.

I highly recommend the dlss 3.5 mod to anyone having issues hitting 60fps in New Atlantis. By all means my laptop isn't up to the task of getting 60fps on it's own, and I only get 30fps in New Atlantis with dlss 3.5 but it helps soooooo much.

Has anyone found the lost ship Supremacy? This is info you get on the same computer in the Echoes of the Past quest for Delgado when you find the info on Kryx's "Legacy" ship. The Supremacy is said to have over 1 million credits on it, but in my searching I only found a lot of Reddit posters, all of whom haven't found it. It's supposed to be in the Sol system somewhere around Saturn.

Just did the Secret Outpost quest. This is linked to info you get off a corpse at the Nova Galactic Staryard in the 2nd main quest in the game called The Old Neighborhood.

I'm telling you, this quest, which leads to a nice lair, pretty much makes up for not being able to find the lost Supremacy ship and it's 1 million credits. You get some legendary suits, some nice weapons, and a ship that's WAY better than the Frontier. I no longer get shredded in battles, I am the shredder! It ain't no million credits, but it makes things a ton easier. I've also yet to loot some Expert and Master safes I saw there, so there's more I need to go back for once I get my Security skill upgraded.

Anyone know what the new update on steam does?
  • Brightness and Contrast controls
  • HDR Calibration Menu
  • FOV Slider
  • Nvidia DLSS Support (PC)
  • 32:9 Ultrawide Monitor Support (PC)
  • Eat button for food!
The above is just a hotfix. They're also working closely with Nvidia, AMD, and Intel on driver support, and expect to have more updates that will improve performance and stability.

Alright I'm confused. Here's how today went.

I downloaded the update.
I deleted the DLSS 3.5 Mod.
The game wouldn't start after that.
I manually deleted the mods folder.
Game still wouldn't start.
I manually deleted all game files, uninstalled then reinstalled the game.

I see no options for DLSS in my display menu. I don't quite understand how dlss support was added. Steam says all updates are installed.
