I am told that XP doen't have a "msconfig" menu through the "run" screen. As
my computer might be overloaded with startup programs, how do I determine
what programs are starting automatically when I boot my computer? Thanks for
any help.

You were told wrong.

msconfig.exe = System Configuration Utility

C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache\msconfig.exe

C:\WINDOWS\PCHealth\HelpCtr\Binaries\msconfig.exe

To start msconfig.exe...
Start | Run | Type: msconfig | OK

To find Startup Programs:

Start | All Programs | Startup
===

Start | Run | Type: msinfo32 | When that opens |
Click the [+] next to Software Environment | Click Startup Programs
===

Right click your Start button | Explore All Users |
When that opens | Click the [+] next to Programs |
Highlight Startup | Look in the right-hand pane |

Click the [+] next to your name (left-hand pane) | Click the [+] next to
Programs | Highlight Startup | Look in the right-hand pane.
