Stealth up/down-loading?!

I'm running XP Pro and FireFox plus I'm on dial-up. It often happens that
when I'm on-line on and reading an article I can see that "something" is
being down/up-loaded. I have no idea what it is - which scares me quite
frankly. I'm scanning my PC on a regular basis with AdAware, have SpyBlaster,
Spyboot in addition to Norton SystemWorks.
How can I see what is being up/down-loaded on my computer??

It could just be your ISP making sure you are still connected,
especially if you are just idle, this would just be occasional network
connection, rather than a solid prolonged connection. To see what is
accessing the internet I would recommend looking at your software
firewall. If you dont have one, try zonealarm.

XP, Firefox and SystemWorks all check to see if there are updates available
for downloading (automatically). Some of these may have been set to
"silently" auto-update themselves. You can check and turn the updates off
yourself.

Periodically?

Could be that the article is in a webpage that is periodically
refreshing parts of itself, possibly with new advertisments for your
viewing displeasure. (If you can still read the article with 'Enable
JavaScript' unchecked, see if that makes a difference.)

Or it could be windows looking for autopudates (one of the more
anoying featurs of windows) or norton looking for updates, I hate it
when things do stuff with out telling you.
