Steam Stream + FreeSync = ???

I want to Stream 4K games from my main rig (5820k & Titan X) to an APU equipped HTPC. My display will be a Wasabi Mango UHD550.

My question is will I benefit from the variable refresh on the HTPC? Does Steam send the video frame-by-frame or does it send a h.264 container at 60fps regardless of the source content?

This is part of a larger project for the main entertainment area of my house.

Adaptive sync is designed only for gaming at it's stage right now, so I cannot guarantee it will work with a streaming program. However, I don't see why it won't work either.

I'm not sure about Steam, but I believe you could do this with OBS (Open Broadcaster Software) which is open source using the x264 library. It allows you to set a custom server to broadcast to so you could connect it to something on your home network.
