Does anyone know for sure if a (single) parity virtual disk in 2012 R2 storage spaces does an initialization like a traditional RAID card would? Seeing some poor performance right after creation but other factors could be in play here.

Solution
Unfortunately I am no expert on storage spaces but I believe the parity is done on the fly as data writes sometimes resulting in very poor performance. There are ways to help with performance like making the "controller" believe it has a battery backup, which should only be done if using a UPS.
