The TV is about 6 or 7 years old, so well out of warranty range. At first I thought it was dirt or dust, but cleaning the TV's surface didn't help. Is it just the TV's components getting old?

I know it's kind of hard to see in the images, but it's there, trust me. It's limited to just the center area of the screen. I checked SONY's website for a troubleshooting guide. I found this page and tried everything but to no avail.

If anyone here is familiar with this sort of issue, I'd appreciate any advice. I'd like to at least check to see if there's anything I can try before throwing in the towel and getting a new TV.

Thanks.

in 95% of cases, replacing the TV is the way to go, especially for one like yours, a 40" 6 year old TV. You can find used working 48+-55" TVs out there for about $150-200.
True, I guess it would be a bit optimistic to hope for a more economic solution. Just feels a bit wasteful, y'know? I guess gone are the days when manufacturers put out products people could easily repair and maintain themselves. Oh well. Just don't think about the mountains of trashed electronics piling up....

If no one else proposes any alternatives I guess I'll start the hunt for a new TV.
