strange hard drive sound

I just built my first computer and about a week later the hdd starts making a strange noise. It's not the notorious clicking hard drive noise that people hear when theirs is about to die. It's more of a scratchy grinding noise. I've tried a bunch of different sata and bay configurations but to no avail. I'm 99% positive it's coming from the hard drive. I read sometimes that fans make a grinding noise but when I listened to it with the cover of the case I'm very positive it was coming from the hdd. I have windows 8.1 on my ssd and I use my hdd mainly for storing games and other larger files. It's a 1tb seagate barracuda. I downloaded seatools and it checked everything and said it was fine but I gave me the option to fix small problem areas. It said they aren't responsible for any data lost so I didn't try it. The drive works fine the sound just doesn't sound right. All help is appreciated thank you in advance.

Solution
Firstly (and you should do this anyway), make a backup of anything important on the drive.

Often, with lots of random I/O, HDDs do make a vaguely crunching sound - the heads rapidly changing direction. That's normal.

I suggest posting a screenshot of what this tool says about the drive.
Thanks for the advice I'll run the test tomorrow. It's like what you described like more of a crunchy noise. I found a YouTube video in another thread that had the exact same sound but a lot more consistent and everyone in that thread said what you did about how the heads moving rapidly on the platter. I don't really need a backup because everything on it is games from steam and drivers so it's all quite replaceable.

I ran the test and it said everything was good thanks for your help!
