strange hardrive problem

A friend of mine has a 200gb partition. He used partition magic to break off 50gb for storage and then tried reformatting the 150gb partition but when he did it only showed up as 120gb and the 50gb partition is gone. And it doesn't say there is 80gb of unpartitioned space on the fdisk. Does anyone know what could of happened?
I know this may of not been the best forum but it seems like the one with the most/best feed back.

Does it have WinXP SP-1 and the latest BIOS and Chipset drivers installed?
