strange internet issue

So odd thing today, my internet disconnected in the middle of a game. tried to resolve issues but showed no connection, wasn't seeing any networks at all when trying to connect to networks. I restarted and it would connect for a brief moment then show the yellow exclamation point saying limited connectivity. Internet was working fine on my phone and laptop during this period of disconnectivity but desktop wasn't connecting or connected and showed limited connectivity. Removed wireless adapter from device manager and reinstalled the drivers etc. Had to open up the computer and clean it before it connected and stayed connected. I ran a speed test and i'm only getting 25mbps while i should get atleast 50+
is my wireless adapter going bad or what? i seem to have issues with lag spikes when playing games and ping jumping around.

Could well be the adapter starting to crap out if other devices are ok. You can pick up a usb-wifi adapter for not much money.

I've had the machine for about 2 years. Whats the lifespan of adapters usually? do you recommend a usb adapter over a built in wifi adapter?

It can vary. Even top quality electronics can go bad, blow up or whatever.
You can buy better and therefore more expensive internal wifi adapters than usb ones. .but in my experience a decent brand usb adapter will do the trick.

before you rule out a bad adaptor try reinstalling the mb chipset drivers and usb driver and make sure you have the newest wifi drivers for the adaptor loaded. over time the drivers can be damaged. run malware and hitman pro scan to make sure there no virus. also try booting into network safe mode f8. see if the device still slow. some time there can be 3 party software that can cause issues.

Aren't wireless adapters better because they use antennas on the outside to get a better connection and strength, speed?
