I have an old computer that I need to use for a CNC controller. It is the newest one I have with an ISA slot which is required for my CNC controller board (DMC-1750). I need to install either Windows 2000 or XP to use the software interface (Mach3) which will not run in newer versions of Windows. So, please do not suggest that I get a new computer or a newer operating system, that is not an option.

The computer has an AMD Athalon 500 MHz processor, AMBIOS Ver 1.24h1 bios, 512MB Ram, ATI Radeon DM-R9250PCI-D3 256 MB video card, 480W power supply, DVD ROM, Floppy Disk. No network interface, no internet connection. My HDD is a Western Digital Caviar SE 250 GB, WD2500, set up as a basic drive (I tried dynamic also with no luck). Clean NTSF format, only one partition. The ISA card is removed during Windows install. There are no SATA options in bios so that is not the problem.

I can install Windows 2000 Pro SP4 on this hard drive in this computer without problems. I really prefer Windows XP Pro SP3, but when I try to install I get the BSOD Stop: 0x7B (0xF7B1E524, ox34,0x00,0x00) error when my Windows XP install CD tries to start windows (after loading all the files, etc).
Both versions of Windows are full not OEM or single computer versions.

I can install Windows XP on the same HDD in another computer from the same CD and it works fine. When I then install the HDD with XP on the old computer it will not boot past the white bar in normal or last known good configuration, or in safe mode past loading Windows\system32\drivers\MUP.sys
When I try to use the XP CD to repair windows, the BSOD appears at the same point as before. Is there some reason that XP will not work on this computer or am I doing something wrong?

I think it could be a chipset driver issue.

here is a link that I hope will work for you.

I used the first option on page two before.

I tried Hiren's boot cd, but it was ver 15.2 and there was no menu icon in the system tray for Mini Windows XP. I did find a disk management program, but it did not detect my HDD. Bios does detect the drive however. I tried the Device manager solution but my Windows 2000 which is on the old PC had a somewhat different name for the disk driver than the newer PC with Windows 7 where I installed the Windows XP that boots in that PC but not in the old one. I will try the third option next.

0x7b is a sata driver prob. It needs sata drivers. If the XP cd doesnt have sata drivers (it wont unless you slipstream them). Change AHCI mode in the BIOS to IDE.

But if you cant change it from AHCI to IDE, then you cant install XP. Until you make a slipstreamed ISO / cd with sata drivers on it

BUT dont change it after windows is installed. You'll get the same stop error

I don't see how this could be the problem since the BIOS and the motherboard on the old PC do not support SATA drives, and there is nothing in BIOS relating to ACHI mode. Yes, the newer PC that I used to install Windows XP has SATA and IDE but not the old one.

Well thats what that stop error means. It may not have the option.

My netbook didnt have the option either. But I had to slipstream SATA drivers on an XP cd. If I wanted to install XP on it

Just because it doesnt give you the option in the BIOS, it doesnt mean it doesnt support AHCI. On some computers its the default option. You cant change it

You need to get them from the mobo maker's site if theyre there.

You maybe able to add them by pressing F6 when it says to press it when you install XP. Extract them first.

But you may need a floppy. XP's setup doesnt have an add option like later versions of windows. And I dont think it supported USB

But if that doesnt work you'll have to install XP on something else, then use Nlite copy the XP cd to the hdd and then slipstream the SATA drivers first

Only prob is the gigabyte site if it is the mobo above, it doesnt list it and it doesnt have drivers for it

Is the GA-7IXE the one youre having probs with??

Because it doesnt even have SATA ports

I am trying to install an image of Windows XP using Maxblast onto the HDD in the old computer now. I am not sure if this will work however since the image was made on the newer computer from a working version on a IDE drive. I have had problems with images made on SATA drives not working when installed on IDE drives.

No luck with the install yet, but it is still working with Windows 2000.

I did finally locate a chipset and BIOS upgrade for the GA71XE motherboard on the Gigabyte website and have downloaded them, but not tried them yet.

Do you know if there is a way to save a copy of my old chipset and BIOS before I try the upgrade in case something goes wrong? Gigabyte warns that flashing a new BIOS can be risky and I don't want to destroy my only working system if I can avoid it.
