Hi there, I am not sure if this is a soft or hardware problem.
Sometimes at boot up, XP Pro SP2, just “waits at XP’s marching ants splash
screen, for some activity on the drive to end. Sometimes this action starts
out of the blue when the computer is on and I can not do anything at all
until the commotion on the drive is over. I did read on the internet about
exactly similar incidents but the simplistic answers point to a faulty hard
drive, since this activity on the drive is accompanied by a soft and regular
three parts, clicking/grinding/ swishing/ hissing kind of noise. Very
different from defragmenting, scanning the drive or a normal hard drive
access. Physically there is nothing wrong with drive whatsoever, I have
tested it and tested it some more, with software from the manufacturer and
all is well, also when the noise is not there it functions faultlessly.
It is a software problem, I would say, but I can not see what is running in
the background because I can not get to anything that would let me check the
background, when is happens. There is certainly no viruses, spyware or
pirated software on it. In a moment of inspiration I decided to Run-> “sfc
/scannow and it seems to reduce this occurs greatly.
Any thoughts of that may be wrong?
George
