Hello,
My friend helped me upgrade my computer a little over a year ago, and it has worked well since then without me so much as opening my case. A couple days ago my mother smelled a faint "electrical smell" which I thought I could smell as well. I opened the computer and pretty much just dusted it, turned it on and used it throughout the day. The next day (yesterday) the smell was stronger and I spent most of the day opening it up and sniffing everything and turning it on and off while watching it. I asked my friend who helped install it a bunch of questions but figured if the computer is working I'll ignore the smell. Today the smell was stronger. I turned the computer on for ten minutes and now half the house smells like tire. I thought it may be the power supply but I never did pinpoint the smell.
Additional info
There were storms a few days ago and we definitely had a power surge. The computer turned off a few times which I blamed on the electricity going out but it turned off once the next day as if it had lost power which confuses me. The computer is connected to a surge protector, which is at least 10 years old. We think it may actually be the surge protector making the smell.
Temperatures have been good, although there were times prior to me getting a program that sets fan speeds that they went above 80 Celsius in parts of the computer.
I had actually thought my hard drive was failing and figured I would use it up, I don't have anything on there im worried about losing. That's why I was continuing to use it despite the smell however it is so strong I'm worried about my health.
The power supply is a corsair CX750M and is only a little over a year old. Everything in the computer was really dusty and I thought that may have caused problems.
Generally, what else could be causing this problem? It smells a lot but I have had no performance issues, excluding the system randomly losing power. I'm in the process of getting a new surge protector though and will say if that works.
