Stupid question about monitor cables

So I have just finished building my first PC(So happy :) ) and I have a 1080p HD TV which I intended to use as the monitor. The PC is working perfectly but it will not detect the TV. I used a HDMI cable to connect it. I also have an old box shaped dinosaur of a montitor which worked fine with the VGA. So how can I get the PC to detect the TV. The TV has a VGA port. I was looking at cables that can be bought online. There are HDMI to VGA cables and regular VGA cables. Would either of these work and one of the cables for sale mentioned needing an analogue to digital converter, what's that, would I need one? Also I heard that when using a HD TV as a monitor that it can force the resolution down. Would using any of these cables do that because I will not have it any other way than full 1080p?

So is there anything I can do to use my TV as a monitor in 1080p resolution or do I have to buy an actual monitor for that?

Have you changed the settings on your TV via the input or source menu? If not, you need to press the source button on the remote and select PC or Computer from the menu options. Since your TV is capable of accepting an HDMI connection you should not need a converter box of any kind. If you connect via VGA and want audio through the TV you will need to do an audio out from the computer to the TV.

Ok, I figured it out myself. It's working now. I think it was because I didn't install the drivers for the graphics card. Only problem now is that I cannot display in full 1080p. After I set the resolution higher than 1280x768 it just starts to go blurry. Any way to fix this. I looked at all the settings and I think the only way to fix it is different cable type.
