hi community :) want to ask something.

when i play skyim with v-sync on i see some micro stuttering that bug me, the FPS is constant 60 but sometimes drop to 59-58 or 61-62.

weirdly i can have 100 fps or up when v-sync off without stuttering, why 1 or 2 fps drop can make my games stuttering? is this because of bad monitor? (mine is VGA display only, i connect it with DVI to VGA adapter) will this issue can change with a DVI connection monitor?

I'm also experiencing this issue with dota 2, even though the fps constant 60 with v-sync on, i'm still see stuttering in my games without fps drop , even though i can make it stop stutter in dota 2 with limiting FPS to 60.

Solution
It is true that a long frame is less obvious the higher your refresh rate is. A 60hz monitor has 17ms frames, when you get a slow frame, it becomes 33ms (the length of frames at 30 FPS). 30 FPS feels quite bad and stuttery.

85hz monitors will have 12ms frames, and when you get a slow frame, that will be 24ms (rather than 33ms). This may be more tolerable by you, and not feel as stuttery. 23ms is a little more than lower than the frame times at 42.5 FPS.

Most PC gamers fine 30 FPS to be choppy, but 40 FPS is more playable.
Some games just don't work as well with Vsync on. I've found some games run smoother with it turned off completely. Vsync is just an attempt to run the game at a constant framerate. However, sometimes by doing so it still is not in sync with the refresh rate of the display and you get stuttering. Turning it off sometimes allow for less stuttering. Some games work great with it turned on.

this is my computer spec :

Intel Core i3 4130 3.4 Ghz | ASRock H87 FATAL1TY Performance | Sapphire Radeon HD 7790 1GB Dual-X OC | 4GB Apacer Black Panther 12800 1600mhz | WDC 1 TB Caviar Blue | SF-500P12A 500W (89%) | Xigmatek Asgard-W Series

my monitor : http://us.aoc.com/monitor_displays/e2070swn

in dota 2 case, the FPS stable at 60 when v-sync on, but the graphic was choppy. (but it can be gone with limiting FPS to 60) (Note: it can play up to 120fps in dota 2 without v-sync)

you see anything wrong with my build?

yeah, when i turn it off there's no stuttering, but there's a bad screen tearing, invisible ghosting line that walk in monitor from bottom to top, also the FPS can reach 100 🙁 which mean my gpu will work harder.

is there any way to play smoothly with v-sync on?

The problem with V-sync is if a frame or two fails to be rendered in time for the next refresh, it has to wait for another refresh. That means that 1 frame may take twice as long to be displayed as all the others. That can cause a little stuttering, especially for the sensitive.

Without v-sync, frame fluctuations are smaller, as if a frame takes slightly longer to be rendered, it is displayed as soon as it is done. The downside is will have tearing.

The only solution that does not introduce additional stuttering and not have tearing, is G-sync.

so what's wrong with mine? the monitor, gpu card, processor, the game itself or something?

just read something about g-sync in nvidia card, but i also read about mantle thing in AMD card that can improve performance.

since i only have ATI card, does that mantle thing can reduce stuttering in gaming?

I see, so the problem is with V-Sync itself.

my monitor already @60hz , I also have old CRT monitor that have 85Hz refresh rate, it seem there's no stuttering when i play with that monitor.

Oh, sorry. I thought that was a 120hz monitor.
