I just bought a new computer 2 weeks ago and I have been dealing with this extremely annoying issue that makes the games almost unplayable. I have tried many fixes but nothing worked so far and it just fills me with sadness that I spent 800$ on a PC that can't run properly 🙁

When I play games like Bioshock infinite, Killing Floor, Dishonored 1 etc... the gameplay is stuttery and not smooth like it should've been. I experience this issue even in really old games like Runescape and Call of duty 2 etc... I always have FRAPS running and it reports that ALL of the games I've played and mentioned so far run with 70+ and even with 100+ FPS but I still somehow get this issue where the gameplay appears jittery/stuttery and not smooth at all.

A thing to note is that under load my graphics card does produce weird buzzing/beeping noise which is most likely coil whine that should not affect the performance of the card.

I ran Heaven benchmark today and some of the scenes were very smooth with 60+ FPS and some of the scenes were choppy and it seemed like the animation was rubber banding/going back a litle bit like in games where the player is jumping back a bit due to server or network problem, that is the best way I can describe what I saw.

I've also noticed that almost 60% of the time when the scene switched to the other one there was a slight 0.5/1 sec freeze and the FPS jumped down from example 100 to 60 and then it went straight back up again. This happened also in the middle of the scenes. The score was pretty decent when I compared it to other scores that people posted on the web with the same PC build. Here are the results though http://imgur.com/a/79qqg

I am experiencing this "freezes" in all of the games I've mentioned as well. I also experience the "rubber banding" in games but it is kinda mixed with stuttering/jittering.

I've come to this forum since my friend told me you guys are amazing at solving difficult problems like this one. You even helped my friend getting a really annoying problem fixed which he is really grateful for.

If you guys know how can I fix this annoying issue or if you can tell me what is wrong with my PC I would really appreciate it ! 😀

hello. what monitor do you have? I assume 1080p? those games you mention should run on ultra without any issue with your system. might it be screen tearing you are seeing? how much HZ does your monitor have? I know a few GPUs can have something called coil whine when they have to push high amounts off Fps. try to activate V-sync or cap max fps at 60 if you have a 60 Hz monitor.

also please update your Nvidia drivers so they are up to date.

Thanks for the response ! I have a BENQ T221WA 1050p monitor. Apparently the monitor is running at 59 Hz when I checked advanced display settings and when I try setting it to 60 Hz it just reverts back to 59 Hz. Yes haha that is the problem these games that I mentioned don't even run smoothly when graphical settings are set to very low. The 0.5 sec freezes and the stuttering/choppy gameplay is driving me mad. It is 100% not screen tearing since I saw screen tearing quite a few times at my friends house. When I tried playing games on his computer even though he had screen tearing the games still ran smoothly and the screen tearing didn't even bother me. Tried swapping out the monitors and the cables with my friend and brother but no luck. Activated V-Sync in game and even tried turning it on through control panel and it did cap my fps at 60 ! The problem got a bit better but it is still there and noticeable. The V-Sync also created an insane input mouse input lag and when I was turning my camera around it was really clunky and it kinda felt delayed. The weird thing is that games some days run a bit better but on some days it is horrible. At this point I'm willing to try almost anything to get this problem sorted.

Might be a memory issue. Do you have any space left on your HDD? How much? Have you monitored your RAM/VRAM while gaming/running a benchmark to see if you are maybe running out? What kind of temperatures are you seeing on your CPU/GPU while gaming running benchmark/stress tests?

OOPS! Can't believe I missed that!
I'm almost positive this is a memory issue. You have one stick of 8GB RAM. If you had two sticks of 4GB you would greatly improve your speed. You have a Dual Channel capable Motherboard and CPU yet you are running in Single channel. Time for a new set and maybe upgrade to 16GB

Thanks for the response ! Yes I do still have plenty of space left on HDD (650 GB). When I'm playing older games that I've mentioned there is plenty of memory to be used and even when I'm playing decently demanding titles. When I'm gaming I see max about 65 degrees on my CPU and about 70 degrees max on GPU but the fans are running on auto which means that they increase in speed when that is needed.

Thanks for that info mate ! Will def get myself the exact same 8 GB Hyperx fury RAM in hopes that it will improve the horrible performance.

Just a heads up with the RAM, although the way you said it, I think you already know. The only guaranteed way that two sticks (or more) work together is to buy a matched set.

I've bought and matched two 2x4GB sets for 16GB before and they worked ;-) It's just not a guarantee

Ram is a pain in the butt :) but i have had some success of mixing Corsair Vengeance sticks in the past. but like you said. its best to buy a kit. AND yes. i am saying this while i myself got a pair of 8GB corsair vengeance RGB sticks, planning on getting another pair at a later time. thinking about this makes me wish i just had spend that 400 euro on a 4x 8 set 😛 lets hope my vengeance ram luck doesn't run out.

OP. Check that the sticks are the same as the original. keep an eye at the timing, so they are the same. might help.

Checked the model number, the speed and all of those numbers and everything matches to the RAM stick that I currently have. Am I good ?

As good as you can get in that situation 😉

Just watched Linus's video about RAM and he said that if you are running single channel or dual channel it shouldn't make much of a difference unless you are running out of memory in games, thats when you have to go for an upgrade. I've already order my kit for 100$ but I think I **** myself by doing that 🙁

If you are really that worried, then just cancel the order before it ships.

Linus is a pretty reliable source but not perfect. If you are confident that your HDD is not the issue, that there is plenty of space and you are not seeing spikes to 100% disk usage when you have these freezes (or at all) then I'd have to say that for some reason it's memory.

You've eliminated the GPU as it does not show any massive drops or freezes. Have you done the same for the CPU? It's not overheating at 65C but it's close to when it starts to thermal throttle (72C). Are you sure you don't have any background or secondary programs that might be hogging the CPU every now and again?

Also, I just had a closer look at your Heaven benchmark, 1680 x 1050p? I haven't seen that one before. It might not make a difference but you are trying to play in 16:10 aspect ratio instead of 16:9. I don't know enough about monitors and resolutions to make a call on whether that makes any issues for games to be run in a different aspect ratio than 16:9 or 21:9 but maybe try that first before anything too expensive.

Thanks for the detailed response mate ! As far as HDD is concerned I played some bioshock right now and a couple of pubg games and there were no spikes on the hard drive and the HDD def has a ton of space left.

When I did the benchmark for my graphics card I mentioned there were some issues when the scenes were switching. The 0.5/1 freezes were kinda annoying during that and when the camera was moving around it felt a bit stuttery. I mentioned a little bit more in the post.

The next thing I will is def benchmark my CPU I guess. Will do the research before doing it since this is going to be my first time. Today I did another fresh install of windows just to be sure. Updated all the gpu and chipset drivers etc... but the issue was still there :/

Tried playing at different aspect ratios and the problem got a bit better but it is def still there.

Just want to thank you for sticking with the post for so long. Many people on other forums usually just give up after a couple of replies but you are still here helping me and I really appreciate that 😀

I didn't cancel the order. We will see what happens when I get these RAM sticks. Kingston hyperx fury series are still considered good memory sticks right ?

I hope you bought at least 16GB of ram.
one thing to check when playing those games and you get the choppiness is to run HWINFO first and leave it hang in the background and after it happens get out of the game and see if the max temp and fan speed are at what max. for the CPU and GPU

Yep ordered 2x8 Hyperx Fury. Just did what you told me. I booted up PUBG which is a high demanding CPU game and the max temps that I've got is 74 degrees. The GPU had max 69 degrees and max 1,117 RPM on the GPU fan. Don't really know where to see the RPM's of CPU on the software.

The RAM you are getting is good RAM :) So for that, it's not a loss and at least you will now have 16GB (which anyone replying to this thread would know if they bothered to read before posting their "help")

You're best bet is to make sure you aren't getting an HDD or CPU bottleneck and if so then you are likely looking at RAM.

You're welcome for the help, I'm going to be starting on a new project any day now so I may not be around to answer. Don't worry though, Tom's Hardware has many people who will help (you just may have to wait a day or two).

wait what, your max temp on your CPU was 74 degrees? what cooler do you have? that is kind of hot. not so hot that it will take dmg but still a bit to hot if you ask me. when i was on air my hottest temp ever was 66 degrees. now that i am on water, my hottest spike is like 55 ish. (6600k @4.5Ghz)

could you please download CPUID and Cinabench for CPU testing? keep an eye on the CPU temp while doing so using MSI AFTERBURNER.

I'm using a stock cooler. The game that I played is really CPU intensive.

Just ran the cinebench r15 test for CPU and I got the score of 578 cb. The usage reached 100% on all
of the cores. Package temperature reached 77 degrees max. The L2 Hit Ratio went up to 70% and the l3 hit ratio
also went up to 70%

I ran OpenGL after that as well and I got 130 fps. The CPU usage reached 45%. Package temperature reached 63
degrees max. The L2 and L3 hit ratio went up to 40 %

When I ran OpenGL again and checked out how graphics card performed. The temps went up to max 65
degrees and the GPU usage went up to max 44% GPU clock was at 1304 Mhz, memory clock at
7012 Mhz and the memory usage went up to max 412 MB.

I realised just now that I had power options set to best performance. The fan speed of the GPU was also
set to auto which means that the fans only start when GPU temps hit 66 degrees and increase when that is
needed. I manually set and increased the fan speed by a little bit, set power options to balanced and the temps of the GPU immediately droped down. The CPU temps also decreased a little bit.

When the fans of the GPU are set to auto and when the CPU and GPU are idle and nothing is running the
CPU temps are at 38 degrees and GPU temps are at 53 degrees. I believe that the K series of this processor
is designed to bear 90+ degrees until it starts throttling.
