I used to have an old pentium 166mhz which I ran win98se on without problems.

I have recently upgraded to a pentium2 at 400mhz with 160mb ram, and
was interested if anyone recommended switching to a slightly newer version of windows (winME perhaps) to get the most out of my new system.

It isn't that win98se isn't running fine, but oddly windows is taking as long to boot/startup as it did on my previous system, and this is even after all my best win98se tweaking knowledge. (for example, my previous 166mhz often benchmarked at around 185mhz, but my new 400mhz system keeps benchmarking at around 394mhz. Best I can figure is that its windows itself rather than anything I can set in the BIOS menu).

Well, at 400mhz you can run Win2k Pro adequately, but with only 160MB of ram I'd recommend staying with 98se. It'll run with 128m, but to do anything you really want 256m. Do not under any circumstances install ME, 98 was better.

The benchmark program probably gives you a speed rating relative to some baseline CPU, and all the different Pentium types are different in efficiency, so the benchmark is probably as accurate as can be expected.

When you upgraded are you using the same hard drive?
Most of the time loading windows is spent waiting for the hard drive, and hard drives didn't get all that much faster between those 2 times anyways.
You said all your tweaking knowledge, briefly what did you do so far?

Mike.

AdWare, MalWare, & SpyWare may be slowing you down also. Are you regularly using Ad-Aware and SpyBot to eliminate these pests??? (FREE)

Also, get "Registry Fix" (pay for it) (tremendous Registry cleaning program) and tighten up your Registry after you take care of aforementioned stuff. You can use it effectively when you eventually find your way to Win2k or XP.

Fishmahn is dead right! Do not go near ME. You're weak in hardware with your cpu and ram. 98SE is the best you can do.
