So, yeah, the 6900 XT is long gone but all of the others are more than numerous enough to be considered viable purchasing options.
Well, it depends... for modern AAA titles, yeah, it can be a problem, especially above 1080p. For online games, hell, even 4GB is enough.
You're preaching to the choir here. I used to have GeForce cards. I had an Albatron GeForce FX 5200, an XFX GeForce 6200, a PNY GeForce 8400 GS PCI (for diagnostic work only) and a Palit GeForce 8500 GT.
Here's the list of video cards that I've owned since then:
2 x XFX Radeon HD 4870
1 x XFX Radeon HD 5450
1 x Dell Radeon HD 5870
1 x XFX Radeon HD 6450
2 x Gigabyte Radeon HD 7970
2 x Sapphire Radeon R9 Fury
1 x XFX Radeon RX 5700 XT
1 x Powercolor Radeon RX 6500 XT
1 x ASRock Radeon RX 6600
1 x O.G. ATi Radeon RX 6800 XT
1 x ASRock RX 7900 XTX
When I saw that the Radeon HD 4870 offered the same performance as the GeForce GTX 260 for $200 less, I never looked back and never bought GeForce again. My craptop has a GeForce GTX 1050 Mobile discrete card in addition to the Vega 8 that came with my R5-3500U APU. However, since I paid the same price for my ASUS Vivobook with that GTX 1050 as other craptops with the same specs that didn't have it, as far as I'm concerned, I got it for free.
Yeah, but that price will fall to something civilised before too long.
I couldn't agree more. I was using an RX 6800 XT but when I heard whispers of AMD, Intel and nVidia dedicating a huge chunk of their fab allocations to GPUs for AI. I heard whispers that this will cause a new GPU shortage. Coupled with the fact that ATi isn't going to produce a high-end card in their next generation, I was getting antsy. See, the first GPU-shortage from mining was in 2017 and I got
extremely lucky because games weren't using Crossfire anymore and so I was kinda stuck with a single HD 7970. I got lucky because out of nowhere, Newegg had the Sapphire R9 Fury for less than half the going rate for an RX 580 at the time. I bought one and some months later, I bought a second one because it was some refurbished Sapphire Nitro (same as the first) for only $100. The second mining craze really got me bad as I ended up paying too much for my RX 6800 XT. I did far better than most but it was still too much. So, this time, I said "Screw this!" and bought an open-box ASRock Radeon RX 7900 XTX Phantom Gaming OC from Newegg for the equivalent of $845USD.
I won't make that mistake again.
