I've got an XFX Radeon R9 280x 3GB double black edition card and think it's time for an upgrade. I play at 1080p on a 40 inch LED so I'd like a card that will be able to handle higher amounts of anti aliasing. I'm sort of an AMD loyalist so I've been looking at either a RX 580 or RX 5500 XT

Here in Australia these are the prices I can get for brand new:
RX 580 8GB - $279
RX 590 8GB - $295
RX 5500 XT 4GB - $299
RX 5500 XT 8GB - $359

If I go with used hardware:
RX 580 8GB - $220

If I get a new GPU I should be able to sell my 280x for a minimum of $80 - $100

My PC:
i7 3770 non k
Asrock H77m motherboard
16GB DDR3 1600 Ram
R9 280x 3GB
Thermaltake 750w 80 plus Bronze
40 inch LED monitor @ 1080p

I plan on keeping this system for another 3 years but I'm pretty sure my 280x won't be able to keep up much longer. I've also been waiting for Doom Eternal which is 10 days away and they recently reveiled that the minimum gpu for that is a R9 290x so I guess now is the right time to upgrade for that and future games

The 2nd hand RX 580 is the most attractive option.
The retail RX 580 is the runner up.
The RX 590 is 3rd banana.

The 5500XTs are overpriced, with the 4GB and 8GB models matching the RX 570 and 580 respectively, and shouldn't be considered at all.

I've been checking out some benchmarks and it seems like the RX 580 is good value at the moment. Would you rather take the used RX 580 8GB for $220 or go with a new RX 590 for $295 ?
