I own a couple of HP Z800 workstations that have older Icy Dock storage docks in them. Each supports four drives and uses two of the older style power connectors to drive the upper and lower sets of drives. Each drive gets a unique SATA data cable on the back and the drive sleds are toolless and allow the drive to slide in from the side (they are otherwise mostly enclosed on the top on and bottom). These have worked well.

I'm building out a third Z800 and am wondering if these older Icy Dock devices are still out there to be found a reasonable used prices or if maybe there's a different component I should look for. These are part of a home lab environment and I generally only end up using two of the four bays.

Anyone have any suggestions of what I might want to look at? I found one for $75 that would work, but if there's a better value to be had, I'm game.

Like this? https://www.ebay.com/itm/Chieftec-S...IOnTopCombiner&_trksid=p2047675.c100752.m1982

At least it's another brand name to google. Also Sabrent seems to have a lot of conversion stuff for 5.25" bays. Bay, array, cage, rack, dock, caddy...unless I'm missing something those are different terms for similar items, some are singles but the rest are multiples.

The older style power connectors you're talking about are molex and this is absolutely the only one I've found with a molex connection.

I think you would find cheaper if you used a conversion kit or "adapter" to put a bay/cage/array/dock/caddy in a 5.25" drive bay or 3. Loads of those around at reasonable prices. You can use a sata to molex converter but apparently at one point those caught on fire a lot but I'm sure that's been fixed now...But do you even need to? If the drives (3.5"?) can use a sata cable they can probably use a sata power connector, but even if they can't and you get a bay/array/cage/rack/dock/caddy, that will probably run on sata power. Your psu should have those even if it's not a modern build imo.

I finally took a look at what you're talking about: https://www.google.com/search?q=HP+...00&aqs=chrome..69i57&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8

I saw plenty of modern 3.5" storage bays (bay/array/cage/rack/dock/caddy) that would work when I was googling. A bit pricey though, yeah.

Thanks.

I forgot to mention that I'm looking for cages for SSD drives, though... 2.5". I will take a look and see if they might have something that would work with the smaller form factor.

The Icy Dock adapters I have consume a single 5.25" bay and can accept up to four 2.5" SSD's. Yes, I could use a power adapter, but that adds to the wiring inside of the chassis which makes it a little harder to keep neat. And, the way these chassis are designed, you can't have wiring everywhere or the various air baffles won't install correctly.
