Hi,
I'm planning to buy a new PC to play recent AAA games on max quality on 1080p and maybe 1440p/4k (if i'll buy a new monitor in the future).
After some research I decided to go with either RTX 4070 or RX 7080, as it seems both of them give the best performance/price ratio for me.
Finding a CPU and Motherboard was more complicated as there are too many options.
Can someone give me a recommendation for a suitable CPU and Motherboard for those graphic cards that won't limit them on the one hand, and that will not be an overkill and too expensive on the other hand?
Thanks in advance

IMO, for performance to price and also future upgradability the 7700X is right up the correct alley. There are some fellows here very adept at creating good build lists once you provide a budget and locale/retailer(s) for shopping with.

If you prefer an Intel build, I personally feel the value is in 12th gen right now. 13th are just starting to see some decent pricing. I cannot personally recommend 14th until maybe later after another gen and socket releases. Pricing is a bit high for what is a very mild tweak to 13th gen and require robust cooling even compared to the earlier predecessors on that socket.

Thanks for the replies, I'll look into the 7700X.
Sorry i see now that i wrote RX 7080 and i meant RX 7800..
The budget and retailers are less relevant because i don't live in the US and the prices are different here, but from the prices i saw in the US let's say about 400-500$ for both the CPU and Motherboard .
Again, I will be satisfied with a good CPU and Motherboard that will not create a bottleneck for those graphic cards for running current and near future AAA games on max settings on 1080p/1440p, without the need for something fancier.
I'm currently on intel i7-930, but i don't mind "changing teams".
My PC is about 12 years with some upgrades - 8GB RAM, R9 290, and i think a couger PSU 630W. I don't think that those parts are relavent.

Would check price in your region against performance. Here the 12th gen CPU are selling for quite lower prices and even alongside some combo deals with a motherboard (and sometimes RAM). To be fair, even the lowest skew in the line is going to be a huge update from that aging 1st gen i7.

If you have in mind to do this update on the low low for now and perhaps consider an update a little later to the CPU I always recommend getting the best motherboard you can and then go with a lower to mid range CPU for now...then perhaps a more powerful option when the update happens when pricing is right. Keep in mind that in a very general sense the next gen's lower skew will be as or more powerful than the previous. For instance a 13700K is actually slightly more powerful than a 12900K so keep that in mind while pricing.

I like to make a short list of things in my budget and then go do some homework for the results in benchmarks, game comparisons and so on.

Thanks a lot for you answer, i'll keep that CPU advice in mind.
I tried to open a new thread for building a new PC and it got moved here so here is the original post from there:

I'm planning to buy a new PC in the next few days which will be based on a RTX 4070 or RX 7800.

My main emphasis for the new PC are:
1. How to choose a CPU and Motherboard that are sufficient to my needs without them ending up being an expensive overkill.
2. Is the relatively small price gap between DDR4 and DDR5 worth it? How much of a difference DDR5 make?

Budget Range: I'm not buying in the U.S. and don't have a strict budget but I want to spend according to my needs and not more.

System Usage from Most to Least Important: Gaming : Playing Recent and near future AAA single player games on max settings on 1080p and maybe 1440p/4k in the future.

Are you buying a monitor: No

Parts to Upgrade: Everything. Building a new PC.

Do you need to buy OS: No.

Preferred Website(s) for Parts: I'm buying at a local store, not in the U.S. Prices are about 30% more expensive but the price gaps between different components are about the same.

Location: At a local store, not in the U.S

Parts Preferences: RTX 4070 or RX 7800

Overclocking: No

SLI or Crossfire: Not sure what that's for

Your Monitor Resolution: Currently 1080p, maybe I'll upgrade in the future.

Additional Comments:

And Most Importantly, Why Are You Upgrading:
My pc is very old and I would like to play recent AAA games with maximum details.

I will be glad to hear some advice.

Thanks in advance

Personally I just built a system. Similar situation, on a budget but wanted something decent and this is what I ended up with

I5 12600kf(got it on sale for $140)
Z690 motherboard(got this as an open box deal for $95)
32gb ddr4 3200-
6800xt(should be in the same class as the 2 gpus you are looking at)
Corsair RMx 859 watt psu

That said for you I’d look at

I5 13400 or higher(for a value option with extra cores you could look at the i7 12700k) though as the other guy said you might wish later for the 13700.
At least 32gb of ram. DDR 4 is a little cheaper but ddr5 is the newer standard
Power supply I’m a fan of the Corsair rmx series. I’d get at least 850, though you may want a 1000 watt for future upgrades.

Whichever card you decide

A ryzen 7700X or non X would be a good starting point. the AM5 and B650 boards support the next gen CPU so you can have a long life out of your PC.

look for B650 boards with pcie 5.0 ssd support. the Gigabyte Aorus Elite is a great choice.

dual channel ram kit - 16gb or 32gb kit. 6000mhz CL30 preferred.

1tb pcie 4.0 ssd
https://www.tomshardware.com/features/ssd-benchmarks-hierarchy#section-m-2-2230-ssd-hierarchy

750W min 850W recommended. Tier A, ATX 3.0 PSU

Deepcool and thermalright have good air coolers. the AK620 or Phantom sprit or peerless assassin are good models.

the 4070 super is goona launch in Jan '24 at CES. Might be worth it to wait for that.

Thanks everyone for the replies.
The budget is not that important because the prices are different here and not all the parts are available here.
I got an offer from the store, I will be happy to hear your opinions on it:

CPU: Intel Core i5 14600KF / 1700 Tray OR AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D OR i7 13700k

CPU Cooler: be quiet! CPU Cooling Shadow Rock 3

Motherboard: Gigabyte B760M GAMING X DDR4 OR Asus B650-A

Memory: Corsair Corsair DDR5 32G (2x16G) 6000 CL36 Vengeance White

Case: be quiet! Case PURE BASE 500 Black

PSU: CoolerMaster MWE GOLD 750W - V2 Full Modular

GPU: Gigabyte GeForce RTX 4070 (DLSS 3) GV-N4070WF3OC-12GD OR RX 7800

SSD: Gigabyte SSD 2.0TB AORUS 5000E M.2 2280 NVMe

I decided to put in some extra money for the CPU so i cut it down to those options from what i was offered and from your recommendations.
As for the Motherboard - the Z690 is not available here so the options are on the list.

Thanks again

I would get a better CPU cooler for those chips. Look at the be quiet! Dark Rock elite or pro 4/5.

The shadow rock 3 would be enough for 7800X3D

What other b650 boards are available for you?

Ryzen needs 6000mhz cl30 rams.

The 4070 super launches in Jan. Might be worth the wait.

Get a tier A, atx 3.0 psu

Thank a lot for the answers.

Ok, so i decided to shift course and eventually buy at least the major parts from amazon.com as the price is still better after taxes and the variety is much larger. I have no option to order from Newegg as it not delivers to my country. I think I'll go with the 7800x3d and the Rtx 4070.

Can you recommend me of a suitable Motherboard from amazon? If it's b650 so can you recommend what type?

Another question - is there a real difference in performance between different types of rtx 4070? For example, is the Gigabyte Windforce enough or should I get the Eagle or Gaming one?

Relatively cheap if you like a blue accent, was common at the time of the I7-930 for boards to be black and blue or black and red.

A more neutral board:

I would probably convince myself to get this one, just for the black/white. I currently have two ASRock Steel Legend boards, no complaints.

RTX4070 are fairly low power compared to the 4070Ti and 4080, but they tend to use the same cooler. So most of them are hugely overbuilt for the job. Just pick the cheapest or the one you like the look of the best.

If you want pcie 5.0 ssd support, go for the Aorus elite, MSI edge, Asus Strix, Asrock Riptide.

cheapest might be the MSI Tomahawk with pcie 4.0 ssd support.

the 4070 is not a hot running card by today's standards. any decent sized card can handle the clocks and temps pretty good.
