I have a Super Orb fan/heatsink and it has the Thermal compund on the heatsink to sit over the processor. At www.Hardcop.com they suggest removing the compound before installing? This seems like a recipe for disaster but they suggest it is better. It seems kind of risky with my new 1GHz TBird. Has anyone tried this or seen any reason to remove the compound?

Thanks,
Brian

the compound on the sink does not conduct heat as well as a premium compound like arctic silver or something similar to that, which is why they recommend it. It's not a bad thing to do,just make sure you have some better goop before doing it. :)

Yeah, get rid of the TIM on there ( thermal interface material ). scrape it off and put on some good paste. i reccomend the Radio Shack stuff personally. I found that as long as you have 2 good smooth surfaces, it works the best. and it is pretty cheap. Arctic silver is known to cause problems with the athlons, and i can personally vouch for that one.

I've used the silver on about 15 classic athlons, and around 30-40 durons and Tbirds with no problems. what kind of issues have you had with the stuff?

Yeah, i've used Arctic Silver on a ton of Athlons, GPUs, memory heatsinks, etc. and NEVER had a problem. What kind of problems could that stuff cause? Just interested.
