Hi there!

I've recently purchased an RTX 3080 Ti and started using it. But when connecting it to my TV I get really weird problems.
Basically, if I use the HDMI port, the TV displays an "invalid signal" message 1 out of 2 times. When it works, it sometimes crash and makes the PC reboot or make the fans go loud even though no graphical program is running.

When I use the DisplayPort output using a DP to HDMI converted, I get this mess:

https://s3.amazonaws.com/i.snag.gy/wHTFnf.jpg

(Note: I'm using one of the default Windows backgrounds which is a pretty blue flower on a darker background, here we can show it's in grayscale, strangely shifted to the right, and with some green and red lines).

But when I plug the graphics card to my PC monitor, no problem. Weither I use the HDMI port with an HDMI cable, the DP port with a DP cable or with a DP to HDMI converter, it works fine. No problem at all, clean image, everything works fine.

It's only when I plug it into the TV that it becomes weird and crashes a lot. I tried disabling VRR (which was causing weird red and green artifacts), HDR and lowering the resolution, but nothing works.

Note that changing the resolution and enabling/disabling HDR when using DP to HDMI (which gives the weird mostly-grayscale picture) any change to the resolution or enabling/disabling HDR has no effect at all - the TV indicates it's receiving a 2160p signal no matter what.

The GPU seems to work correctly on Ubuntu, although the display is slightly cropped even with the correct resolution set (2160p). No idea if it comes from the OS.
Any idea what's causing this? I bought the card to someone who used it on a PC monitor and it also worked flawlessly (like on mine). I ensured the GPU was seated properly, I tried to remove it / add it again, the TV works perfectly fine with another GPU, the PSU is fine too (Corsair RM850x with a Ryzen 7900 non-X and no other PCIe device). I tried reinstalling the drivers, tried DDU, etc.

I'm using Windows 11, with latest Nvidia drivers, MSI A620M-E motherboard, DDR5 RAM, NVMe SSD. I'm using the latest BIOS for this GPU. I also updated my TV (LG C1) to get the latest update.

The HDMI & DP ports as well as the DP to HDMI adapter and the HDMI cable itself seem to work fine since they work without any problem on my monitor, it's only on the TV that it messes up. PSU is strong enough as I was able to run games both on my TV (when it works sometimes) and on my monitor flawlessly.

Thanks for your help!

what is the length of the HDMI cable and what version HDMI?

you will find many complaining of issue with extra long cables.
signal degradation and connectivity issue seem the most common.
you usually will need a fairly high quality cable for >~4' with this type of connection.
DisplayPort output using a DP to HDMI converted
adapters like this can easily add to the problem.
they should also be of higher quality to ensure proper signal.

The cable is a 5m long HDMI 2.1 cable. But it worked flawlessly for months with my previous GPU. Only with the new is it making weird issues. Also having a grayscale screen like that + the GPU crashing it really weird.

Also when it works, I can play a game for maybe 30 min without any issue, and when closing the game the GPU crashes for instance.

the display being outputted to will not affect the performance of the card itself.

if this is consistent random crashing then it is either a fault of the card and would probably need to be replaced
or a fault of the system that it is connected to.

include your complete system specs
+ make & model of the PSU along with it's time in use

Sure!

Motherboard: MSI PRO A620M-E (on latest stable BIOS)
CPU: Ryzen 7900 (non-X)
RAM: 2x Corsair Vengeance DDR5 32 GB 5600 MHz CL40
SSD: Samsung 970 Evo Plus 2TB
PSU: Corsair RM850x
Cooler: Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 SE
Case: Asus Prime AP201
Case fans: 4x Arctic P12 PWM PST (using daisy chaining to use only 1 fan header)
OS: Windows 11 Pro 23H2
Nvidia driver: Gaming driver (not Studio) version 551.23

No other components. Usually connected to network through an Ethernet cable, and a few USB devices are connected (hub for keyboard, mouse, bluetooth receiver & gamepad wireless receiver ; USB DAC ; USB SSD enclsoure).

The PC has been in use for about 5 months now.

EDIT: forgot to add that while the HDMI cable itself is 2.1 (and I saw it working with 2.1 features), the DP to HDMI converter is 2.0.

I also just found the fix for the grayscale issue: output not in RGB but in YCbCrc422 (with limited range). Seems to work fine! I think that because I was outputting 4K @ 60 Hz with HDR and 4:4:4 chroma it was making the signal buggy. But now I'm unable to enable HDR - maybe because it's only HDMI 2.0 and not 2.0a or something? I don't know.

For the HDMI cable though nothing works: it still makes the GPU behave weirdly and crash even with this setting, even though the cable is 2.1. The TV is correctly detected in the Nvidia Control panel as a 2160p screen with G-Sync support (which I lose with the DP adapter) though.

EDIT 2: I was finally able to use the HDMI cable after a lot of struggle, but only at 1080p, 60 Hz, YcbCrc422. Going to 120 Hz or to 4K @ 60 will make the GPU crash.

Yeah but on my RTX 2060 Super it works flawlessly, with its HDMI 2.0a I was able to get 4K @ 120 Hz with HDR and never had any problem.
