People are brainwashed by MS marketing to think Win7 is so different from Vista, and have paid twice for a renamed OS. I use XP & 7 daily, and know/feel by heart the extra pain & steps it takes to do anything: browse & open files, copy/paste, rename & make dirs & organize your docs; search files/folders, tweak settings for comfort & efficiency (desktop res, fonts, toolbars, remove useless buttons & commands and auto-functions ... etc), install programs, USE programs ... etc.

What did 7 fix from Vista? UAC? Shell? Explorer? Search? Resource hogging? Old & legacy hardware/software support? All just marketing BS from my daily experience. Unreasonable price & loss-of-productivity to pay just for Dx11 & 2+GB ram support.

For what its worth Ive been around since the Old Dos days So I have used every Os except 8 Which I probally wont. For me win 95 was heaven then a upgrade to 98 was even better then came Win me which was a horrible mistake on Ms end that was one of the worst OS I ever used I reverted back 98 till Win xp was out finally Ms got a hit on there hands was a real good OS AND STILL IS . Vista in my book Was the second terrible producted shoved down peoples throat, Then win 7 which I am using now works fine. I played win linux off and on for years and if the direction MS is moving into With Win 8 is tablet interface from now on I will probally take the needed time and go to Linux.

I've heard Win 8 is faster (I don't see it), I've heard Win 8 is better "under the hood" (I don't see it), I've heard that you can upgrade to a start button through third party software but when I tried that the os was still buggy. I stuck with XP until Win 7 SP1 and now I'll likely stick with Win 7 until Win 9 SP1.

If it wasnt the 64bit + DirectX10 issue, majority will still be on XP. People upgrading windows 7 is for 64bit and DirectX10.

We might going to see the same thing again if Microsoft decide to be silly by making DirectX12 Windows 9 exclusive.

Ok, i'm not a fan of metro UI, but this survey was very, very vague. checking the popularity of an OS even before it's launched properly is a bit dumb.

Biggest drawback of Windows 8 is cloud computing.

I will never buy a Windows OS with this feature. I want my data locally where I control access and security.

You don't have to use the cloud, you know.

[citation][nom]JOSHSKORN[/nom]Did we really need a survey on this? This is as obvious as smoking causing lung cancer. Windows 8 is the new Windows Vista.[/citation]

the prophet has spoken people....

ever since xp was released every forum had its prophets claiming doom for microsofts new os & every time has been proven wrong lol

2001 - xp is a rainbow coloured bloatware, im so sticking with win 98 se
2006 - vista is so laggy on my 1ghz celeron with 512meg of ddr ram
2009 - win 7 is just a service pack to vista, its all marketing hype, im so sticking with xp sp3
2012 - omg no start button on the task bar, i'll have to press the windows key on the keyboard instead >.< /head exploads

I wouldn't be surprised if when windows 8 is released official, they allow you to have "classic desktop" and the only reason they didn't allow this in the beta versions was so to force people to use the Metro desktop for testing purposes. They wanted this tested before release so that they didn't end up with a half baked system. Apple should do the same with their big new features Siri and maps would of worked much better if it was tested by some of the public before official launch.
My computer is due for a upgrade and there is a good chance I will get Win 8.

You can't fix stupid, the ultimate problem will always be the dumb end-user

"On the other hand, 26 percent of respondents answered that they had tried Windows 8, so it's possible that almost the entire group who tried the new OS named it their favorite."

So, instead the title should be of the article is that almost everybody who tried it 8, likes it. Of course, nobody is going to post a headline like that.

Ever notice that we love our current version of the OS and bash the next one. Then when switch to the third version. Then we repeat.

DOS = Great!!
Windows 3.1 = meh
Windows 95 = Great!
Windows 98 = meh (disaster)
Windows 98se = Great!
Windows 2000 = meh
Windows XP = Great!
Windows Vista = meh (disaster)
Windows 7 = Great!
Windows 8 = meh

Results will always be the same.

MS-DOS = shit. Always was.
Windows 1~2 = Not an OS. Pure useless garbage.
Windows 3 = Not an OS. Semi-functional, but garbage by 1986 standards.
Windows NT 3.x = Barely functional garbage.
Windows NT 4 = worked, kind-of. Service Pack hell. (A SP could wipe out drivers. Re-install drivers = takes out part of SP which program XYZ requires to function. ARGH!!!)

Windows 95 = First MS consumer GUI OS... Plug N Pray sucked. Re-installing Win95 every 2-4 months was considered "Normal"!! Check out magazine archives - no BS! Using GHOST was a life-saver in doing clean restorations.
Windows 98 = Good... no worse than Win95.
Windows98SE = Great.
Windows ME = Almost as bad as Windows95. (I actually STILL have a retail disc/package... it lived for 5 days on my PC)

Windows XP = Good, better, Great (SP0 / SP1 / SP2+)
Windows Vista = skin-job, unreliable bug-fest.
Windows 7 = Most bug-free OS ever, from MS. Actual OS functionality enhancements add.
Windows 8 = UI hell, designed by middle-management retards.

I'm about to build myself a new i5-3570 system... Rather than going with the $40 Win8 deal I qualify for, I'll be spending $140 for Win7Pro OEM instead. Win8 *IS NOT* meh... its PUKE.

ya missed a few versions there

DOS = Great!!
Windows 1 meh
windows 2.03 great
Windows 3.1 = meh
windows for workgroups 3.11 great
Windows 95 = meh
windows NT great
Windows 98 = meh (disaster)

Windows XP = meh (disaster)
Windows Vista = great

see there is not pattern with windows releases, i added the versions you missed out and it completely screwed up your pattern. i could mess it up even more if i add service packs and server editions which are a genuine windows os in there own right anyway.

anyway bring on the full release of windows 8, cant wait to buy 2 copys for my pcs 😛

i was sorta agreeing with you till you said vista was a bug fest & any real computer technician knew at the time and knows now that vista was a case of bad drivers on release & poor choice of hardware on new pc's (512 to 1 gig of ram instead of 2 gig minimum), after sp2 vista was perfect though i used it since it was released and was fine. so it wasn't Microsoft fault in the end, just poor support from companies like creative

though i find it ironic with win 7 since it is vista with a new taskbar and nothing else, is it just me or does anyone else remember project mojave?

heres the link for project mojave

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ihorvo2tEuA

i know most of it is marketing but it proved that all microsoft had to do is change the name of vista to win 7 or anything else and people will like it . i think it was fud that stalled vista and gave a boost to win 7.

i lost count of how many fake technicians (you know the ones, they install a gfx card or do a reinstall of windows & now there a expert) telling there parents/grand parents friends etc that "i have tested vista & i know its crap or a lemon" so i get these twats coming in demanding refunds or wanting xp installed on it for free when for what they used it for was completely fine.

I just moved my home PC to Win7 due to DX10/DX11. At office we still run XP32.

XP64 and Win2003 64-bit are pretty fast, light on resources and stable. There were initial problems due to lack of driver support and proper testing but these problems are long gone.

Concerning the Aero effects indroduced with Vista the best alternative was Stardock WindowBlinds. And it actually works better than Aero.

I don't understand whats the fuss is about with windows 8. I been using the evaluation version and might plan on upgrading when its time to build a new pc. Seriously people, let it go. W8 is a step up from windows 7 due to the fact that you have a desktop plus to cater tablets and full screen apps. Navigating is simple too. With that said. Here come the people with their tinfoil hats lol.

[citation][nom]ben850[/nom]Brother, I used to be in your boat. Windows 7 is where it's at. Trust me.[/citation]

I have windows xp, windows 7 and 2 linux installs in my grub menu, 98% of the time I choose to boot into XP. I disabled updates on day one so I don't care about patches , etc.. third party tools keep me safe anyway without need to update them. As long as the pc runs I will continue to do the same

among those who had experience with Windows 8, the fast boot up feature was the most welcome improvement (56 percent or respondents chose this feature), followed by easy installation with 50 percent

Lol. So the most popular features are the two which don't involve actually using it - installation and waiting to get into it! ;o)
