I have an old Gateway GT5464 with a bad motherboard. The bad motherboard is a Gateway/Intel Coconut Creek 945GC intel #4006181R. I have obtained a used on for 20 bucks. The existing processor is an Intel Core 2 Duo E2140 1.6 ghz 800mhz socket LGA775.
I can purchase a used Intel Core 2 Duo E4700 2.6 ghz 800 mhz LGA775
on ebay for 10 bucks. Since I have to open the machine up I may as well upgrade the procesor while I am at it.
Gateway has a very limited BIOS and I am wondering if the motherboard will see the E4700 processor without messing with the Bios? The machine is used only for emails and selling on eBay no games. Thanks

Thanks. I have no way to see the BIOS at this time as the machine will not boot to BIOS. I suppose the best thing to do will be to
swap the E2140 into the replacement board, obtain the BIOS version and see if Gateway has an updated version. I believe the
E4700 came out after the E2140 so the original BIOS may not support it. I have never flashed a BIOS so I am a bit gun shy to do so. I don't want to brick the replacement motherboard..:) As I recall the original BIOS is very limited as to what can be configured.

I installed a E4600 processor and it would not post. Now I'm not sure if the E4600 is defective or my motherboard will not support it.
I upgraded the bios to the most recent Intel 945GCCR1 bios.
The machine runs fine with the E2140 but will not post with the E4600 installed.

The E4600 was defective, the supplier sent me a replacement and it worked like a charm.
I don't think it would have worked with the original Gateway BIOS. The Intel Bios I upgraded to gives me a pretty Intel logo
instead of the ugly Gateway logo.
Thanks for your help
