Swapped GPU AMD to NVIDIA. Computer won't boot with new card but will with old.

I just bought an evga GeForce gtx 1060 SSC card. Upgrading from my Radeon 4850 (oldie). When I put the new card in my PC won't boot. I can get to the bios but that's it. It won't make it to the Windows splash and the screen just stays black. If I put the old card in my computer boots up just fine. A buddy of mine brought his PC over and we put the card in it, his booted just fine, so the card works and his power supply was 400W, mine is 600W. I've tried just about everything listed in forums...running DDU, trying to manually delete drivers, running with both cards at the same time, swapping PIC slots, I even upgraded to Windows 10 from 7 ultimate. I also can't boot into safe mode with the new gpu, and my mobo doesn't have on board graphics. Set up is thermaltake TR-600 600W power supply, gigabyte ga-p55-ud3r mobo, i5 650 processor, 8gb DDR3 RAM. I spent literally 15 hours on this yesterday and I'm about to give up. When I first turn the pc on the fans will start up and after a couple of seconds (probably 30ish) they stop. Don't remember if it did that on my buddy's pc or not or if it's just an auto function of the card to reduce power consumption

The only time it seems that you'll need a different cable is the initial usage to get the drivers installed. Your buddy already has hdmi active drivers enabled, so when you stick your card in his pc, it worked. It seems you don't have hdmi active drivers yet, so just to get the screen going use a dvi cable at first. With the drivers and card installed, you should be able to revert to hdmi if you wish. Although with a 1080p/60Hz monitor dvi, hdmi, dp is all the same except dvi-d which doesn't carry analog audio, so no monitor speakers, you'd need to use the dvi-i connection and cable.

You ran DDU in Safe Mode, with all of the additional options selected (like remove C:/AMD folder)? You should select Clean and Shutdown then after power down I would pull the CMOS battery, 24-pin, and CPU power connectors.

Let it sit for 10 minutes and then reassemble. If that doesn't work (or if you tried exactly that) we may have to do some more thinking.

EDIT: You actually may want to run DDU twice for both AMD and NVIDIA drivers and only Shut-down on the second clean

Well... If that didn't work my next try would be a different power supply. If the card is working in another machine and an alternate card is working in your machine that seems next most likely.

With DDU run multiple times in Safe Mode there shouldn't be a driver issue and the default Windows Display Driver should at least get you going.

What's weird and I think might be screwing me is as soon as I run DDU my old GPU immediately starts reinstalling it's drivers again and I can't stop it. I guess they are stored on the card itself or something. The automatic driver install is disabled in windows.

And if it was the power supply why wouldn't it boot with the 750 ti but it will fine with the 4850? I don't have much running on it, just the specs I've listed, a DVD drive, cpu cooler master and a fan controller with only 2 of the 4 fans plugged in right now.

The card does not have drivers on it. Windows update is doing that if anything.

If your network cable is unplugged it should run on the Windows Default Display Driver. Also, DDU should be disabling automatic driver updates when you run it.

I thought is was a GTX 1060 SSC? In any case, it was just a suggestion as you have already eliminated other possibilities and determined that both the PCIe slot and the card itself are functional under other circumstances.

bag? You mean VGA?

It shouldn't matter as long as you are plugged into the GPU and not the motherboard.

Yea I meant vga. Phone changed it. And yea it's plugged into the GPU. Motherboard doesn't have a display plugin. I think it might just be an AMD fanboy. I even have a 2nd 4850 that's artifacting but it'll still boot right up with that.

Don't use ddu to uninstall Intel, that'll be the drivers for the cpu igpu and are a pain to put back in.

The cards themselves do not need drivers to work, windows will use generic VGA drivers as long as a card is detected. Either use the jumper or pull the battery (unplug the pc first, then push/hold power and count to 20 to drain all the caps). On power up, the bios will be working with an empty cmos (that's where bios stores all the hardware info) so will do a long startup as it'll have to search out all hardware and settings. The only way that nvidia card isn't working is if it's not detected.

Use amd card. Dl latest nvidia drivers, save to desktop. Run ddu amd to remove any vestiges of amd card. Switch input to mobo and remove amd card. Boot. You should get a screen from the mobo output as no dedicated gpu is detected. Install the nvidia drivers. Shut down. Add nvidia card. Swap output to gpu. Boot to bios, make sure dedicated gpu PEG) is primary. F10 save and exit, it'll reboot. You should get windows.

I have had some luck using the following clean install procedure to cure weird persistant errors. Might be worth a try. Make sure you do not have a network cable plugged into the machine at all.


  • ■ Disconnect all drives except the one you are installing on
    ■ Restart with your boot media inserted (or boot from BIOS or advanced start-up menu)
    ■ When you are in the Windows install program, before selecting a drive to install on:
    ■ use Shift+F10 to open a command prompt

    ■ type the command "diskpart"
    ■ type "list disk"
    ■ look at the list to determine which is your drive (there should only be one)
    ■ type "select disk 0" or disc 1 or whatever it is
    ■ it should say something like "disc 0 is now the selected disc"
    ■ type "clean"
    ■ alternatively you can type "clean all" which is a more intensive wipe but takes longer
    ■ I have generally had good luck just using the "clean" command, sometimes several times in a row (seemed to help once)
    ■ If desired, you can format the drive here by typing "format MBR" or "format GPT" depending
    ■ type "exit"
    ■ you can now close the command prompt and continue with installation as normal, just select your disk, which should say "Unallocated Space" and begin

I would download the offline installer package for your recommended NVIDIA drivers and then do the clean install using the AMD card with NO network connection.

If the install is successful and the card is running on the Windows driver then just shut down and swap the cards as normal. Then install the NVIDIA driver package before connecting to the network.

If that doesn't work.... I don't know man....

I plugged in the speakers and I could hear the Windows sound for the login so the computer is booting up. The displays backlight stays lit up like it has an input but the screen is blank.

Have you tried an alternate cable? Or using a different port on the card?
