Swapping motherboard, but will the windows work ?

Solution
if your asking, will my current copy of my installed on my hard drive windows operating system will properly work after I swap the motherboard.
that questions in a nutshell is not simple to answer;
I have seen it burp, load drivers for new hardware, delete old hardware driver and reboot 5 times to become stable and functional
I have seen it burp, flip out, and blue screen of death refusing to ever boot, not even in safe mode.

so my suggestion before you do this... back up you data on an external hard drive or thumb drive because your running 50/50 chance it will not work properly after hardware changes, and will force you to reinstall a fresh copy of windows all over.

the OEM windows is tied to the motherboard you are replacing. replace that and you will need a new windows key.
windows 10 can be run without activation for some time if the finances are an issue, you can use it while you save for a license
Linux Mint is a good free linux distro that is very easy for windows users to use.

"OEM Software Licensing
License Transfers*
OEM Software may NOT be transferred to another machine.
Even if the original laptop, PC or Server is no longer in use, or if the software is
removed from the original hardware, OEM licenses are tied to the device on which
the software is first installed"
