Did installation and assembly go smoothly. Was it what you expected? You have us all drooling and fantasizing, do tell of your success.

LOL, well I had some trouble with the damn LAN. The two Gbit LANs in there were in conflict or something, WinXP became so dumb it didn't find the router at all, and sometimes it would, but then the router wouldn't connect, as if my cables weren't properly connected to the DSL modem and to the wall. I later thought about installing the chipset drivers...

But even that didn't solve much. In the end though, I said "ah screw that, the installation must've just not worked perfectly", so I system restore back to the main point of the installation of WinXP, which wasn't far at all, and for some reason, it did the trick. I configured a few things and it worked. I did have to disable the Gbit LANs though, and install the wireless PCI LAN card from Gigabyte's board, and try it. It worked well for the first few times, but occasionally after a reboot would not detect the network. Worse yet, next morning, the net works a bit and then finally it bugged once again. Friggin' thing!

So I wondered perhaps the Gigabyte software was screwing the wireless networking, so I uninstall it and let Windows manage it. Well it looks like MS knows their crap, cuz since then the whole thing's been perfectly stable. I still am curious as to what caused this, as the board and drivers should be ok when managing the 3 network interfaces and keeping them working in harmony.

That aside, the only few things that at first didn't work were basically the front LED, though that was also quickly solved as I pilfered through the remaining case accessories.

Since it was my first time building a comp, it obviously wasn't the smoothest thing when using the case's removable mobo tray outside, so we settled on not using it.
The speaker cable had us quite confused too, Aspire didn't include a traditional PC speaker mounted on the bottom or side of the case. Instead it was this quite subtle connection included that's a small cylinder like a capacitor, that did the beeps. Not quite the best and most flexible thing because you can break the cables or the thing attached to them. But it was a nice challenge I admit, though it made us wonder if some stuff was not bundled, for a while.

It was a fun build I'll say and yes, for the first time in a while, after all things have been ironed out, this system truly did meet my expectations and more. I look forward to having time to play around more with it.

Wow, I did not know that your were a virgin! What a way to bust that cherry! I think you are probably in the top 5% for a first build on rig of that quality. Congrats!

I didn't realize that either. All this time and you've never built a PC? That's impressive.

Nicely done though.

Heheh yeah, I may look like I know a sh@tload, but it's only in theory most of it. I had my PC built in 2002, so I never got a chance to practice. I've a few times assembled some parts and helped build someone else's rig, but with very little involvment. This time I had my uncle help out, as I obviously discovered my utter lack of electrical and mecanical building skills, not being able to insert much of the things properly. But I did essentially solve most of the issues by myself, so I'm happy about that. I still find that Aspire PC speaker thing one of the most weird things I've seen in a cable connected device. Has anyone had a PC speaker that wasn't a sort of metallic speaker attached to the bottom of the case or the front?

I found out today by Aspire that my headlights (well, the smaller ones) should be flashing upon drive access. Well, ain't that cool, I'm gonna call them tommorow and have it troubleshooted. That should serve for an interesting extra for design!

BTW why do you think it's impressive that this was my first build?

Lousy school, GAH!

I'll try to find some time this weekend. MUST play immersive games immediately!!!

Doom III, HL2, ANYTHING!

I WILL say that WoW at 16x AF and 6x AA at a fluid 60FPS was nice.

I've had the 3800+ upped to 2.5GHZ a few times, it worked normally, though temps were quite up. Hadn't benched it or stressed it at that speed though. I do plan eventually to try 2.6GHZ for the heck of it. Thing's got enough room for higher temps anyways. Stock cooler 46ºC load? Hell yeah I'm gonna OC a bit. I'm very happy with what AMD has done with their K8 technology by using SOI. Truly a revolutionary technology for silicon that Intel should have adopted a LONG time ago, being the leaders of leakage.

I haven't thought about OCing the vid card yet, but I bet it wouldn't go far, and I'd prefer not to risk a damn 700$ US buy, if you know what I mean... 😱

I would never have guessed. That's all. It is nice though isn't it?

Oh yeah, I was feeling much more confident from there on when playing with the parts. I used to be so cautious and freaked out toying inside the case. This one's got me feelin' confident to take risks.

It definitely is rewarding to see the machine up after you witnessed the parts all seperate in their boxes. I'm lovin' every damn time I come into the room and see the blue light show from that BMW monster!

Most people who don't like modified cases admitted mine had a pretty nice look. I think its more subdued yet classy look helps (glossy exterior too).

Only problem I have is the case fans seem to whine too much. I think I'll test without them or try to find something to reduce their speeds, perhaps a front fan controller. The only thing I wonder though is that if I lower the RPM, won't the fan LEDs also become less bright?

Yes, they will dim, but they should be bright enough that lowering teh voltage alittle for noise will still allow enough light output to be satified, if not, crank em back up!

You can easily re-wire them for 7V instead of 12 (assuming they're connected to the PSU with molex plugs rather than the mobo). on a molex going to a fan you can re-arrange the pins so the 'live' (red) wire is still plugged into the 12V (normally yellow) from the PSU, but move the black one over to the far side of the connector, so it's plugged into the 5V line. obviously if the fan connector is a straight-through type one (with another molex) then this makes the other end useless for anything apart from fans, as it's completely non-standard.

You can also wire them for 5V, by leaving the ground (black) wire where it is, but moving the +ve over to the 5V end of the molex.

OR, you can wire up some switches which flick between 12V and 5V (or 12V and 7V), so you can have 'quiet mode' and 'normal'. This is what I've done to mine.

The only thing I wonder though is that if I lower the RPM, won't the fan LEDs also become less bright?
Yup. I have 2 LED 80mm fans, and one 120mm one. When I switch the fans to 5V the 80mm ones go out completely, but the (much larger) 'UV' LEDs in the 120mm Fan just get dimmer.

I have no idea why I have LED fans. I bought the 80mm ones for a laugh (but they were all I had when I decided I needed another fan or two!), and the 120mm was the only available fan from the site where I bought my XP-120. I don't even have a window in my case 😱 ... Although I'm thinking about cutting out my own at some point and sticking some perspex in (although my artistic side is a bit of a feeble jibbering moron, so I suspect it'll look f*cking terrible  )

Disconnected both case fans today for fun. Holy F!

These things practically added 20db to the total system noise! Now when I get into the room I can barely hear the damn system. Prior to that I could almost hear the whine from the bedroom to the dining room! They must be cheap kinds or something. I sure don't wanna stop using them though, they gave good cooling performance and the case's design only seems complete with their LEDs. I'm thinking lowering the RPM is what is needed.

Where can I get those mini voltage switches? I think that might be the best thing for now if I look at the way my wires are all connected. Are the connectors cheap too?

Oh and how "dim" relatively, do the LEDs get? Assuming I go 7V.

On average how much does voltage affect the RPM? Say I go for 7V for example. Does that nearly halve the speed, as in a proportional kind of way?

I love the room and the interior of the case's lighting from them, so if they dim too much, it'd sorta suck.

Thanks to all though for your suggestions and help.
