SWG is fun for awhile I guess. My nephew started playing pretty hard-core
when it launched last spring/summer. Right now we're "grinding holo's" in
the hopes of opening up force sensitive character slots (jedi char slot on a
server in addition to the one char you're allowed per server. The
holo-grind means this: at character creation your char is randomly assigned
5 professions that you'll need to master before opening a jedi slot. The
holocrons - found on certain mob's in SWG and given out as Xmas '03
presents - will tell you 4 of the 5 professions you need to master to open
the slot. The 5th profession? You're on your own. I've had friends grind
up to 20 some professions out of maybe 30 (i think) and STILL not find the
magic 5th profession. It would be analogous to having to GM 4 different
skills in UO then guess at the 5th one to get another character slot on your
server. This whole fiasco of an implementation has taken the servers from
all "HEAVY" load listings at prime time say through the summer, to mostly
"LIGHT" now days and what were the busiest NPC cities are amazingly empty of
actual other players. SOE claims that they're going to redo the force
sensitive system since in talking to people almost no one is happy that they
have to scrap they're ONE character on a server and take up different
professions just to get a shot at playing a jedi.
You can have a blast like Dani said in another reply. I still play when I
can and will continue to grind through professions (already mastered
Marksman, Scout - both needed master to open Bounty Hunter tree - Bounty
Hunter, and Pistoleer, currently working towards Swordsman - holocron #2,
first was pistoleer).
I'm down to 60-day game time cards since I got pretty disenchanted once I
found out how they had implemented opening force sensitive slots, and
getting ready to graduate from college *again* has also cut into my SWG time
=( Aside from that though if you are desperately seeking a break from
dragons and liches and dwarves and halflings (*waves to UO and EQ*) then
give it a shot. It has the standard 30-day free with CC activation and is a
bit pricier than UO's monthly rate - 14.99.
If you have the PC to run it (currently playing on a p4 2.8ghz, 1gb ram, nv
gf-fx5950 256mb - all settings maxed can get a bit choppy in high-poly
areas), it has some of the best graphics and interface design of any MMOG
I've played so far. And no wonder...it's made by the company that makes EQ
and designed by one of the original designers for UO. It's updated
continuously, has ongoing story arcs, and you can blast stuff with a blaster
for change instead of Cor Por!
My first log in I came out into the world in Mos Espa in the midst of some
NPC storm troopers completely putting the smack down on some overt rebel
players, they were a little way off from me but the sound of the stray
blaster bolts smashing into the wall behind me hooked me on the game almost
immediately.
Good luck!
