Swiftech MC462 problems

I have an mc462 which, after some modification, I managed to mount on an Asus a7m266 and I can attest to a lot of the information in this thread. First, the a7m266 violated the freezone around the socket set forth in the AMD socket specifications and - I thought - moved the mounting holes forward in an attempt to remedy that situation. Now it appears I may have gotten one of the hsf's in question. After breaking one of the fan retaining lugs from my socket, long story :), I was pretty determined to get the mc462 mounted on it because it used the screws instead of the clips. So, I pulled a few of the pins out of the hs on the corner, and took a 3/8" drill to it and removed the corner gaining enough clearance to get the capacitor cleared and mount the hsf. Then, I noticed the hs resting on top of the socket right away. As I said, I thought Asus was to blame, but no matter, there was no turning back now. I marked the hs where I needed it to be to gain clearance, and using a block of soft pine as a guide, used a cut-off tool (high speed 2" air-powered grinding wheel) to shave the copper back about 1/8" and got it to completely clear the socket. With the Sunon fan installed on the hs, I can idle at around 38C in a 27-28c room. Where the no-name hsf I had that broke the socket idled at around 47c. Hey, I live in Florida, I LIKE heat! In the room that is, not my cpu. As I don't care about the noise, I'm anxiously awaiting the arrival of the Delta fan. The cfm's quoted are correct - there is a big difference between the Sunnon and the Delta.

The copper is very soft, and at 786grams I figured the hs could stand to lose a little of it's mass and still perform nicely, I wasn't disappointed. When I get the Delta (c'mon Coolerguys!) I'm planning to run a 80mm hose through the side of the case and let it pull cool air directly to the fan. I'm really expecting it to go just a few degrees above room temp.

With the mb out of the case, it is easy to see if it's resting on the socket and just as easy to mark it where it needs to be shaved.

As Tom stated, the hs doesn't really shine until presented with a high thermal load so even if you don't get the idle exactly where you want it to be, I'd be concerned more with where the loaded temp is anyway. But alas, you are high right now. My thoughts are leaning towards it resting on the socket too. I got it from the same place you did, probably the same batch.

Q: What temp is your room?
