News Switch 2 has a 120 Hz screen with response times that are too slow for 60 Hz gaming, tester claims

"The Switch 2’s 7.9-inch, 1920 x 1080 LCD screen is a massive improvement over the original."

That's from Tomshardware's review. So... which is it? Great or horrible?
Both.

Everything I've seen indicates the response time is awful but pretty much everything else is improved. Given how poor performance was on the Switch overall latency probably doesn't feel any different most of the time.

Nintendo hasn’t made great hardware since the glory days of the NES and SNES. That was such an amazing time to be a gamer and live through the evolutions of that time period. I kind of feel sad that kids today will not experience that.

I would love to see Nintendo experience a console revolution with cutting edge and innovative hardware and games again but pretty sure that ship has sailed. Now they just put out mediocre at best hardware and a couple of good games and call it a day. They still sell because parents today (the gamers from the 80’s and 90’s) have nostalgia and buy them for their kids. I wish at the very least they would release a higher tier console (maybe non-portable) at a much higher price point that allows for some really good hardware to be used.

Wow! A lot of trash talk and prejudices toward a device that most people here don't even know. The Switch 2 has the equivalent horsepower of the Xbox Series S in a handheld device that can also be used as a regular console, with also all the features of the Wii. Of course a lot of people are interested to get one, not only the die hard Nintendo fans who "would buy a piece of feces" if the company sold it to them.

All the reviews I have read said it's a very good console equipped with impressive hardware. People here saying it's crap just because some Chinese rando claims the screen response time is awful just shows how people like to thrash things they don't use and will jump on any excuses to do so.

Prior to a month ago, the last Nintendo game I played was on the Wii, 15 years ago, so I'm obviously far from being a Nintendo die hard fan, but I still bought a Switch 2 because I had a long trip scheduled and wanted to be able to play on something better than a phone, and the new switch seemed to be the cheapest and most straightforward option. And I have to say that I love it. Of course it doesn't even come close to my high-end PC, but it provides a more than decent gaming experience and although I am extremely picky about smoothness and monitor time response on my PC, I have yet to experience any of these "awful" screen response time problems mentioned here.

That opening sentence is pretty bold when you follow it up with a falsehood.

Your "experience" doesn't change the facts. The screen is worse than the original Switch screen and isn't very good in general when it comes to response times. This doesn't mean the experience is going to be bad as there are many things that add overall latency beyond just the screen response time.

Was JUST gonna say! THAT was probably peak Nintendo, both in the quality of the hardware AND The quality of the games.

I was just watching a video yesterday, showing an HDMI mod you can install (with some soldering required). AND they added the mod chip that lets you load games from an SD card. If I could find a good used Gamecube for a reasonable price and a couple of functional Wavebird controllers, I am totally doing this! I would rather spend my gaming money on games I can own than games I just rent from a shady company that feels they have the right to brick the hardware I buy!

The question I have is: does this constitute as false advertising?
Because Vizio did just that and got hit with a class-action lawsuit, lost, and had to pay out $3 Million

Meh, maybe it was my age. By the time GameCube came out I was an adult and more interested in girls and PC gaming. I didn’t do much with consoles after late 90’s. I did have a few PlayStations and Xboxes but they just felt like lesser PC’s that you could play on the TV. They were fun when gaming with friends before online games over the internet came out. None of them had that magic of the NES and SNES though, they were the beginning of really fun video games. The NES was such a huge jump from Atari and the SNES was another huge jump over the NES.

This so far from the truth it isn’t even worthy of a response. Everyone knows the switch and switch 2 hardware are very outdated. It’s only real draw is portability, low cost, and Nintendo exclusive games like Mario and Zelda. It wins in those 3 areas but hardware was never anything to brag about.

This is a nothing burger for now. Have owned a Switch for several years and it checks all the boxes for fun and performance. Having read a ton of reviews for Switch 2 I have gathered that it will offer the same. They aren’t trying to cram a PC into a handheld or console. It’s a different mindset. Visit Japan and see how the product appears to satisfy the elements of the culture. Portability check. Flawless engineering check. Fun, bright and cute check. Heritage of long history of Japanese gaming check. Is it going to be used for DOTA or online competition? Doubt it..

Not sure what this means. Still using the original ones with no problem. Show us some first-hand experience with the ones you own.
You are just being obtuse, the issue is widely known. There are hundreds of articles, YouTube videos, and there were even some lawsuits over it. Nintendo of course won them because they have really good clause contracts with everything they sell. They didn’t win because there wasn’t an issue, the issue was proven and widely experienced, they just weren’t liable due to clause contracts. They can’t be held liable for anything for any reason really. Lost track how many joy cons my switch went through since 2017. It’s a bad design caused by extreme efforts to reduce energy consumption allowing for smaller and cheaper batteries.

I am sorry that you went through so many joy cons, you must really enjoy this marvel of engineering.

Not me, my kid and wife. They both put a lot of hours into Zelda and Mario cart. After those it sat a lot. I made one play through of Zelda. It was a really good game. Would have been a lot better with better hardware though. Framerate in Zelda was generally poor.

All anolog sticks will eventually experience drift issues but the Nintendo joy cons were the worst by far. The Xbox ones would last about 4x longer. You can find lots of technical articles on the subject, many written by engineers. The issues are pretty clearly laid out and proven. They tried to make them ultra efficient but it came at the cost of durability on the analog contacts. They should have fixed the issue but instead chose to keep selling them as they were.

I don’t have an issue necessarily with them keeping cost down and using outdated components to do so. It helps get them in more kids hands which is never a bad thing. They should offer a more premium version though for people who want and can afford a better experience. They should keep the portable switch but I would love to see a higher end home console.
