Switching from ISP Router HELP

So I am switching away from the generic router that my Provider has given me and here is the issue: When I connect the new Linksys to the modem and try to configure it. When I do this, the router blinks showing that there is not connection.

What I've done to fix this:

I called the provider and they said that they cant do anything on their part and that a new router setup should work.

I connected the ISP router to the new Linksys and set it up that way. This WORKED. I was able to broadcast a connection off of the old router. But I dont want the connections to be split up like that, but if it comes down to it, that'll be my solution.

Any reason why this is not working?

If this is a cable modem you likely need to power cycle the modem everytime you change what you plug into it. Most will lock the first mac address they see and only talk to that until you reboot it.

Yes It is a cable modem and I went on linksys's website to find some answers and the MAC address keeps coming up. I think I will have to manually configure it. I just dont know what it should be.
