The northbridge fan on this board is sounding like its days are very
much numbered... I see that Soyo has chipset fans on their e-store
which presumably are the identical part if you specify the correct mb
p/n. I know there are also passive coolers available. Will the
latter do the job? Would like something that will last longer than
the original fan.

I've used Zalman NB32J passive Northbridge heatsinks with good results,
though I assume that the glue will fail eventually. You can find reviews
online. I think the trick is to hang onto the glue syringes that Zalman
provides, and periodically open the case and try to twist the heatsink off
using just a small amount of force. If it comes off, you reglue it. Not
exactly elegant, but...

Motherboard manufacturers should provide passive Northbridge cooling with a
heatsink held in place by screws or some other mechanical method. You can't
depend on anything else. With the little fans, eventually either the fan
fails, or the glue fails and the fan falls off the chip and just spins away
without notifying you that there is a problem. Bad design. You're lucky you
heard the fan dying.
