Question syncing machines to operate as the same machine

I have a laptop and desktop computer. I currently have a Nas setup.
I'm thinking that some sort of file sync program that will work on the Nas and talk to both machines when powered on and sync any file differences between data on the Nas and the machine currently powered on. If anyone has a better way around this I'm all ears and would be very greatful.

The default way would to just have your working files live on the NAS, and you access them from either the desktop or laptop as needed.

I would be hoping from desktop to laptop and the laptop could be from anywhere so I was hoping the files would sync and I wouldn't have to put much thought into saving the files in certain areas only update and save. Maybe I'm just being lazy but if you have any idea how to do this it would be great
