SyncMaster PX2370 Resolution issues

I just purchased a new SyncMaster PX2370 and it works fine in windows, it looks great. But part of the reason why i chose this monitor is because of the HDMI input on the rear panel, so i could skip buying a television for a little while. So i have my PX2370 hooked up via HDMI and it works, but not to what i would like. The resolution (which i apparently can't change) is 719x480p. I'm somewhat new to this game as far as what monitors and telvisions are capable of, but this monitor was rated as HD 1080p. So i called up samsung customer service and asked her about my problem and she said that there was no way adjusting it in HDMI mode. I told her that if that was the case i would return the samsung and go with another brand and she told me no other brand can display 1080p in HDMI either. So i'm here to ask #1 do you know if any other monitors can offer true 1080p HD being used in HDMI mode (as a television essentially), and as a last resort #2 do you know of any way to make the PX2370 work at higher resolutions, being that there is something that i missed.

That customer service rep does not know what she is talking about. If HDMI did not support 1920 x 1080, then it would not be the primary video connection for all HDTVs. HDMI is basically just like a DVI port with a different pin layout and it carries audio signals as well.

What are you hooking up to the HDMI port of the monitor? Is it the video card of the computer? Or it is a cable box with a HDMI port?

If it's connected to the video card of the computer, then what video card do you have?

If it's connected to a cable box, then....

1. Do you have HD cable service?
2. Did you set the cable box to channel that broadcasts HD content?

I'm by no means an expert at this stuff, and i may not have it hooked up properly, but i still get a picture so i'm somewhat right. I have a high-end receiver which has my X-box serving as my DVD player connected to AV6 on my receiver. I have my old box television video going to monitor out on my receiver. Then i have my HD cable box going to AV5 on my receiver. The coax cable is naturally going from the wall to my HD cable box. The strange part is (and this may be why i'm not getting the true signal i need) the HDMI is going straight from the SyncMaster to the receiver HDMI out. I came to this setup just browsing my receiver manual. The HDMI connection is essentially bypassing the cable box (which has one unused HDMI port) and going to the only HDMI out, on my receiver. There are a total of 4 unused HDMI ports on my receiver. I hope this helps helps you visualize things.

1. I do have HD cable service i just installed the box today and i am able to access HD programming.

2. I assume the box is set to broadcast HD after a signal was sent to this box activating it(once i hooked it up). I requested this HD box with an HDMI port at my local Comcast office. Where i was once told i couldn't watch HD movies i now have no problem doing so.

Ok i hooked up the HDMI from the SyncMaster straight to the Cable Box instead of going straight to the receiver. I am now getting a resolution of 1280x720 which is better but still not 1080p. Would purchasing a Monster HDMI cable at Best Buy be worth the money or is this generic HDMI cable that came with the box doing the same job. I am unable to increase the resolution manually through the menu panel, but at least the resolution is a little better now. Any thoughts on getting me to true 1080p?

What happens if you connect your computer to the monitor using HDMI?

My graphics cards don't support HDMI. But if you're trying to get at what resolution the monitor runs at in Windows it runs flawlessly at 1920x1080. The monitor is connected to the computer right now through DVI. I suppose i could try to find a HDMI to DVI adaptor or cable, but that would simply give me a connection that i already have.

I think i fixed it. By connecting the HDMI cable to the cable box instead of going straight to the receiver worked. It didn't show up initially, but i remembered the age old secret to electronics. If you make a change power it off, then power it back on. By turning the monitor off, and turning it back on, the info screen read 1920x1079. So i guess we can mark this one as solved.

The issue is quite simple.

Not every "HD content" is capable of outputting full 1080p resolution. You may expect your games to run at native 1080p but the vast majority of them are developed to HD (720p) standards, meaning you are rarely ever going to game at full 1080p. So your output resolution of 1280x720 is perfectly normal.

Its the same with cable TV. If you have a HD box with HD channels you will only be able to view 720p programmes unless the network providers up scale the signals to 1080p. The standard bandwidth is limited to 720p...
