System burn in - are these temps ok?

Hi all,

I just finished a new build (spec at end of post) and I am currently testing. I am worried about my temps.

My core 1 idles at 53 with the others ranging between 40-45c. At 100% load (AIDA64) the cores all run at around 60-64 (at stock specs). Was hoping for better considering the aftermarket cooler. Not a good place to start overclocking from! Also noted that even at 62-64 the CPU fan was only at around 50%.

The GPU is also running a bit high. It got to 81c by the end of the latest FurMark test (though oddly GPU fan was only at around 50% even at 81c??),

I am suspecting the following culprits:

- I removed the side case fan in order to have place for the CPU cooler. I installed an additional back fan to make good for this. Has this screwed up the case's airflow too much?

- For the thermal paste, I tried to use the pea method. However too much liquid came out the moment I touched the tube (the cooler master stuff is very watery). The dose then was say 1.5 of what I consider to be pea sized. I removed some of it, however this meant smudging it. Should have cleaned and reapplied but instead I shifted to an alternative method I read about - the square method. This consists of making a small, very thin and very flat square. I did check the chip for finger prints before applying the thermal paste - it was immaculate.

Any thoughts? are these temps too far from the mean?

ps: ambient temp here is 29c atm.

Specs:
Case: Xclio A380
Intel Core i5-3570K 3.40GHz, , Gigabyte Z77X-D3H Intel Z77, Crucial Ballistix Sport 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz, HIS HD 7950 IceQ BOOST 3072MB**Voltage Unlocked**, Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo CPU Cooler, Samsung 256GB SSD 840 PRO SATA 6Gb/s

Solution

The idle is a bit hot maybe turn the fans up a bit but all those temps are fine the cpu is good untill maybe 75C then it's a bit to hot for using and the gpu is fine. Maybe set a fan curve so when it reaches those temps the fans are more than 50% if you want but those temps are all good and maybe a bit oc OC' if you ramp up the fans :)

Try some Mx-4 thermal paste my favorite 😀

1. The Hyper 212 while still a great "budget cooler", finishes as much as 14C behind the better air coolers....that's huge.

2. Can't top Shin Etsu in the TIM department .... and no 200 hours of thermal cycling curing time like AS5

3. 81C is not unusual for GPU on Furmark.

4. You can use OCCT to test both GPU and CPU while monitoring temps and voltages.

5. As for CPU temps, here's another THG users results

thats the best solution for you... try to adjust the rpm of the fans corresponding of the temp by the bios setting or software..

Tried to up the curve but the max the fan will go up to is 1400 even though the hardware is meant to reach 2000rpm - help!

Trying to overclock a bit (just tuner for now). At 4.5mhz, core 1 spiked to 105c in first 3 min of testing. Now testing at 4.3mhz. Temps are stable at around 75-80c. Is this too high?

Been testing on Aida for 20m - all seems stable so far (by the way, how long do you suggest testing an overclocking setting for?)

Ow, and thanks Jack for the general guidance - much appreciated.
