Hi. I was wondering if anyone here was familiar with using System File
Checker on XP Pro SP2. Yesterday I ran "sfc /scannow". sfc needed to
replace a dll file and asked for the original Windows CD. After getting
the original CD, however, sfc said it was the wrong CD. Question.
Would the SP2 CD have the files needed for sfc?

This is a spin-off question from the "Making a Recovery CD for SP2". I
want to find out if I need to make a SP2 Recovery CD for sfc...Dennis

You will need to modify the registry paths for sfc
Mine look like this (with D: as my CD drive):
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup]

"SourcePath"="D:\\"
"ServicePackSourcePath"="c:\\windows\\ServicePackFiles"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion]
"
"SourcePath"="D:\\"

So that sfc will look for files on the SP2 CD rather then the original
XP CD?

I've never seen the notation for an sp2 CD upgrade. You would have to find a system that had done that.

Hi Dennis,Step two at the link below will explain it for you,Basically you
will no longer need any CD sfc will use your i386 folder on the hard drive
for reference.
http://www.updatexp.com/scannow-sfc.html

However in the future you may need to boot from your CD to accomplish some
repairs which now you cannot do,When you have time you need to make a new XP
CD with SP2 on it this is called "slipstreaming"
But this is not required right now to run the SFC

I did a regedit and checked
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\
CurrentVersion\Setup. I do indeed have a C:\WINNT\ServicePackFiles
folder. Changed SourcePath from "D:\" to "C:\". sfc /scannow now runs
without a hitch. That's a relief!

Dennis

Go to Start, Control Panel, Folder Options, View, Advanced Settings and
verify that the box before "Show hidden files and folders" is checked
and "Hide protected operating system files " is unchecked. You may need
to scroll down to see the second item.

Now try looking for ServicePackFiles.

Do you know your Windows XP Product Key? If yes where did you get the
information from?

Hope this helps.
